Watford vs Sheffield Wednesday: Match preview
Championship football returns on Friday following the international break with promotion hopefuls Watford hosting Sheffield Wednesday at Vicarage Road.
Prior to the international break, Watford picked up their fifth consecutive win with a 3-0 victory at home to Birmingham City. Ken Sema, Nathaniel Chalobah, and Andre Gray were all on the scoresheet.
Xisco Munoz’s side are on course to achieve automatic promotion. Watford are currently 2nd in the table on 75 points, eight points behind league leaders Norwich.
Watford have the best home record in the division, picking up 15 wins and 47 points from their 19 matches at home.
Watford have also scored the highest number of goals at home (38), while only conceding 12 (3rd). The Hornets have won five consecutive matches at Vicarage Road, conceding just one goal in that run.
Prior to the international break, Sheffield Wednesday beat playoff hopefuls Barnsley 2-1 away from home. Jordan Rhodes netted both goals for the Owls. Wednesday still remain firmly in the relegation zone in 23rd position, six points from safety.
The international break came at a bad time for Sheffield Wednesday, who looked to be putting a little run together. Darren Moore’s side have avoided defeat in their last two matches, having lost each of the previous seven before that.
Sheffield Wednesday’s away record ranks 22nd in the Championship. The Owls have only picked up 14 points on the road all season, managing four wins and two draws. Only one team has conceded more away goals than Wednesday (33).
The two sides played out a 0-0 draw in the reverse fixture at Hillsborough in September.
