Swansea have a narrow advantage over Barnsley heading into Saturday’s second leg. The Welsh side have now beaten Barnsley three times this season and will be confident about reaching the play-off final.

Between mid-February and early April, Barnsley won six consecutive away matches. They’ll need to refind that away form if they are to reach Wembley.

It should be noted that Swansea have only won one of their last six matches at the Liberty Stadium.

Swansea vs Barnsley: Match preview

Aggregate: Swansea 1-0 Barnsley

Swansea welcome Barnsley to the Liberty Stadium on Saturday for the second-leg of their Championship play-off semi-final tie.

Swansea won the first leg 1-0, although that doesn’t tell the whole story. Andre Ayew’s curler was the only goal of the game, but Barnsley were quite unlucky not to find the net in the first leg, with Swansea goalkeeper pulling of a number of brilliant saves.

Swansea finished 4th in the table, one place and two points above Barnsley – although they didn’t enjoy the best of run-ins. The Welsh side managed just one win in their final five matches before the play-offs.

Swansea had the fifth-best home record in the Championship this season, winning 12 and drawing six of their 23 matches at the Liberty Stadium. The Swans only conceded 16 goals at home all season.

Swansea spent seven consecutive seasons in the Premier League between 2011 and 2018. They came close to making a return last season but lost their play-off semi-final tie with Brentford 3-2 on aggregate.

Barnsley surpassed expectations this season, finishing 5th in the table on 78 points. Bear in mind that Barnsley finished 21st last season and were tipped to be in another relegation battle this season.

Barnsley’s away record ranked 5th in the Championship. The Tykes won 11 and drew three of their 23 matches on the road, scoring and conceding 28 goals.

Barnsley have been something of a yo-yo club in recent seasons, jumping up and down between the Championship and League 1. Barnsley have only competed in one Premier League campaign, back in 1997-98. They were relegated after finishing 19th and have not returned since.

Swansea are unbeaten in their last 13 matches against Barnsley, a run stretching back to 2008. Steve Cooper’s side did the double over Barnsley this season, winning 2-0 both home and away. Jamal Lowe scored in both matches.

The winners of the tie will face one of Bournemouth or Brentford in the Championship play-off final at Wembley next weekend. Bournemouth currently have a slender 1-0 lead over Brentford heading into the second leg of the tie.

Swansea team news vs Barnsley

Steve Cooper could name an unchanged eleven from the first leg.

Kyle Naughton was preferred to Connor Roberts at right back.

Liam Cullen didn’t have the best of first legs, but is unlikely to be displaced in the eleven by Wayne Routledge.

Conor Hourihane is set to face his former club. The 30-year-old midfielder made over 120 appearances for Barnsley before joining Aston Villa in 2017.

Korey Smith is another former Barnsley player on Swansea’s books, having had a brief loan spell at the Tykes in 2012.

Barnsley team news vs Swansea

Ben Williams remains Barnsley’s only confirmed absentee.

Carlton Morris impressed off the bench in the first leg and could replace Dominik Frieser in the starting eleven.

Michael Sollbauer should keep his place in defence ahead of Toby Sibbick.
