Reading vs Middlesbrough: Match preview

Reading host Middlesbrough at the Madejski Stadium on Saturday.

Reading ended their three-match winless run on Tuesday with a 2-0 away win at Bristol City. Lucas Joao opened the scoring late in the first half. Reading’s lead was quickly doubled with a first-half stoppage-time goal from Michael Morrison.

Tuesday’s result leaves Reading 5th in the table on 51 points.

Reading’s home form this season ranks 6th in the league, with nine wins and six defeats at home. The Madejski Stadium is the only ground yet to play host to a draw this season.

The Royals have lost their last two matches at home. Their most recent home game ended in a 2-1 defeat against Millwall.

Middlesbrough picked up their first win in six matches on Tuesday, beating Huddersfield 2-1 at the Riverside Stadium. They went behind early on but turned the game around through an incredible solo goal from Duncan Watmore, followed by an Ashley Fletcher penalty. Boro finished the match with 10 men after Paddy McNair was sent off.

Neil Warnock’s side are 8th in the table, six points behind the final play-off spot, and eight points behind Saturday’s opponents Reading. A win for Boro on Saturday would certainly keep them in the mix for the playoffs.

Middlesbrough’s away form ranks 15th in the Championship, with four wins, five draws, and six defeats on the road this season.

Boro’s last away game ended in a 2-1 defeat at Derby County last weekend. Neeskens Kebano, on loan from Fulham, netted in the first half but it wasn’t enough to prevent defeat for Boro.

The two sides played out a 0-0 draw at the Riverside in the reverse fixture in October 2020. Prior to that, Boro won seven consecutive matches against Reading.

Reading team news vs Middlesbrough

Reading boss Veljko Paunovic could name an unchanged lineup from the one which beat Bristol City in midweek.

Liam Moore comes back into contention, but the club captain may have to settle for a place on the bench due to Tom McIntyre’s solid form.

Alfa Semedo should keep his place in the starting eleven as Josh Laurent remains doubtful, as does Felipe Araruna.

John Swift and Yakou Meite are sidelined for the home side.

Middlesbrough team news vs Reading

Paddy McNair will miss out on Saturday through suspension. McNair was sent off in the final ten minutes against Huddersfield after picking up a second yellow card.

Grant Hall is expcted to deputise for McNair and partner Anfernee Dijksteel in defence.

George Saville could be recalled in midfield after starting on the bench in midweek.

Marcus Tavernier, Marcus Browne and Dael Fry are sidelined for Boro.
