The permutations are simple. Rotherham have to beat Cardiff to have any hope of avoiding relegation. That’ll be a tough task for a Millers side that are without a win in seven. Even if Paul Warne’s side do win, they will still need to rely on results elsewhere to stay in the Championship.

Cardiff are unbeaten in their last five matches, including back-to-back wins in their previous two. The Bluebirds could finish 7th if results on Saturday go their way, agonisingly close, but ultimately short, of a spot in the playoffs.

Cardiff vs Rotherham: Recommended bets

Over 2.5 goals. Six of the last eight matches at the Cardiff City Stadium have produced three or more goals.

Cardiff to keep a clean sheet. Rotherham have failed to score a single goal in any of their last five away matches.

Harry Wilson to score. The Liverpool loanee netted a sensational hat-trick last weekend and will surely be rewarded with another start. Wilson has scored just seven goals this season but clearly has his shooting boots on right now.

Cardiff vs Rotherham: Match preview

Cardiff’s final match of the Championship season sees them welcome relegation-threatened Rotherham to the Cardiff City Stadium on Saturday.

Cardiff extended their unbeaten run to five matches last weekend with a big 4-0 win away to Birmingham City. Harry Wilson scored a brilliant hat-trick, while Mark Harris also netted in the second half.

Cardiff remain 8th on 67 points after last weekend’s win. They could finish one place higher if they beat Rotherham and Reading draw or lose at home to Huddersfield. Cardiff could also finish one place lower if they lose and QPR beat Luton Town. Ultimately, there’s not much riding on this match for Mick McCarthy’s side, who fell just short of a playoff place this season.

Cardiff’s home form has been particularly disappointing this season, ranking 17th in the Championship. In fact, Mick McCarthy’s side have picked up nine more points on the road than at home. Cardiff have won eight and drawn five of their 22 matches at the Cardiff City Stadium – although they have scored 36 goals at home which is the fifth-highest tally. Cardiff’s most recent home match ended in a 2-1 win over Wycombe.

Rotherham kept their faint survival hopes alive on Tuesday with a second consecutive draw, this time a 0-0 stalemate away at Luton Town. Paul Warne’s side remain 22nd in the table, one place and two points above Derby, who themselves have lost six on the spin.

The Millers will stay up if they beat Cardiff and Derby lose to Sheffield Wednesday. If Rotherham win and Derby draw, the sides would finish level on 44 points, but Derby would still finish above Rotherham, so long as the Millers don’t win by six goals. If Rotherham fail to win on Saturday, they will be relegated to League One.

Rotherham’s away record ranks 19th in the division, with six wins and four draws away from home. The Millers have actually picked up three more points on the road than they have at home.

Their recent away form doesn’t bode well, however. Although they picked up a point in Tuesday’s goalless draw, Rotherham have failed to score – let alone win – in any of their previous five away matches.

Cardiff beat Rotherham 2-1 at the New York Stadium in the reverse fixture in February. Sheyi Ojo had given Rotherham the lead before Matt Crooks’ equaliser and Joe Bennett’s late headed winner.

Rotherham have failed to win any of their previous five matches at the Cardiff City Stadium. Each of the last seven meetings between the two sides have produced at least three goals.

Cardiff team news vs Rotherham

Mick McCarthy has a lengthy absentee list heading into the match.

Cardiff’s leading scorer Kieffer Moore is a doubt after picking up an Achilles injury last weekend, meaning Mark Harris could lead the Bluebirds’ attack.

With Sean Morrison out, Marlon Pack will play at centre-back.

Elsewhere, Joe Bennett, Lee Tomlin, Joel Bagan, Max Watters, and David Hoilettt are all unavailable, while Tom Sang is a further doubt.

Will Vaulks is set to face his former club. Vaulks made 125 league appearances for Rotherham before signing for Cardiff in 2019. Kieffer Moore is another former Rotherham player, having spent the 2017-18 season on loan at the New York Stadium.

Rotherham team news vs Cardiff

Rotherham have just one confirmed absentee, with George Hirst unavailable.

With goals needed, Freddie Ladapo should partner Michael Smith in attack.
