Brentford vs Swansea: Championship play-off final match preview

Brentford take on Swansea in the Championship play-off final.

Brentford lost 1-0 at Bournemouth in the first leg of their semi-final tie. They also fell behind early on in the second leg, giving themselves a mountain to climb. Ivan Toney halved the deficit from the penalty spot, before Bournemouth went down to 10 men when Chris Mepham got sent off. Thomas Frank’s side made the most of their man advantage. Further goals from Vitaly Janelt and Marcus Forss sent Brentford to Wembley.

The Bees finished third in the table this season, eventually missing out on an automatic spot by just four points. Prior to the play-offs, Brentford ended the league season on a 12-match unbeaten run.

Brentford have been playing in the Championship for seven consecutive seasons. They reached the play-offs in the 2014-15 season but failed to gain promotion. The Bees have never played in the Premier League, and last competed in England’s top tier in the 1940s.

Swansea beat Barnsley 1-0 in the first leg of their semi-final tie. Andre Ayew scored the only goal of the game. The Swans were held to a 1-1 draw in the second leg, but Matty Grimes’ opener was enough to secure the aggregate win.

Steve Cooper’s side finished 4th in the table, one place and seven points behind Brentford. The Swans didn’t enjoy the best of run-ins. The Welsh side managed just one win in their final five matches before the play-offs.

Swansea won 23 and drew 11 of their 46 matches this season, scoring 56 goals and conceding 39. Brentford won 24 and drew 15 of their 46 league games. Brentford were the leading scorers in the Championship with a whopping 79 goals.

Swansea spent seven consecutive seasons in the Premier League between 2011 and 2018. They came close to making a return last season but lost their play-off semi-final tie with Brentford 3-2 on aggregate.

Brentford and Swansea drew 1-1 in both league games this season. Swansea have only won one of their previous six matches against the Bees.

Brentford team news vs Swansea

Bryan Mbeumo could drop down to the bench after struggling to make an impact in either game against Bournemouth. Marcus Forss, who scored from the bench in the second leg, could replace him up front.

Christian Norgaard is a doubt for Saturday after suffering an injury in the warmup against the Cherries.

Emiliano Marcandos will compete with Tarique Fosu-Henry for a starting role behind the two strikers.

Shandon Baptiste and Josh Dasilva are ruled out for the Bees, while Rico Henry is another doubt.

Swansea team news vs Brentford

Kyle Naughton and Connor Roberts will compete for a spot at right-back.

The other area of contention is in attack, where veteran winger Wayne Routledge will be looking to keep his place. Steven Benda is Swansea’s only confirmed absentee for Saturday.

Backup goalkeeper Ben Hamer made 80 appearances for Brentford, although he’s unlikely to feature against his former club. Hamer is yet to make a single appearance for Swansea since signing for the club in January.

Jake Bidwell is set to face his former club. The left-back made over 200 appearances for Brentford.
