Match: Brentford vs Cardiff

Competition: Championship

Date: April 20, 2021

Kick-off time: 6:00 pm, April 20, 2021 (UK time)

Stadium: Brentford Community Stadium

Betting prediction: Brentford 2-0 Cardiff

Brentford extended their unbeaten run on the weekend, drawing at home to Millwall. Despite dropping points in six of their last eight matches, the Bees are well on course to qualify for the playoffs.

If Brentford start turning draws into wins – and Watford slip up – they may even have a slim chance of finishing in the automatic promotion spot.

Cardiff picked up an away draw at Reading on Friday night, although they have only one of their last eight matches. The Bluebirds’ recent form means the playoffs are just out of reach.

Brentford vs Cardiff: Recommended bets

Brentford to keep a clean sheet. Brentford have not conceded in their last three matches.

Ivan Toney to score. Toney has 29 goals to his name this season and is on course to finish at the Championship’s leading goalscorer this season.

Brentford vs Cardiff: Match preview

Playoff hopefuls Brentford welcome Cardiff City to the Brentford Community Stadium on Tuesday evening.

Brentford were held to a goalless draw at home to Millwall on Saturday – their second consecutive 0-0 draw at home. Although Brentford are unbeaten in their last seven matches, five of those have ended in draws.

Thomas Frank’s side find themselves 4th in the table on 74 points – with a game in hand over all the sides around them. A win would move them up to 3rd, although they would still be five behind Watford (who take on leaders Norwich). Brentford are seven points clear of Reading in 7th, so a playoff finish seems nailed on.

Brentford have the fifth-best home record in the Championship this season, winning 10 of their 20 matches at the Brentford Community Stadium and drawing a further eight.

Brentford are unbeaten in their last five matches at home, although each of the last three have been draws.

Cardiff’s winless run extended to four matches on Friday as they drew 1-1 away to Reading. Kieffer Moore struck late on from the penalty spot before Reading equalised in stoppage time.

With four matches remaining, Cardiff are 10 points away from the playoffs, but a top-half finish will still be respectable.

Cardiff have the fourth-best away record in the league – it’s been their home form that has let them down this season. The Bluebirds have won nine and drawn seven of their 21 matches on the road.

It is worth pointing out that Cardiff have only lost one of their previous nine matches away from home.

Brentford beat Cardiff 3-2 in the reverse fixture in Wales in December. Sergi Canos scored a hat-trick for the visitors, while Will Vaulks netted a brace for Cardiff. Brentford are unbeaten in their last three against Cardiff.

Brentford team news vs Cardiff

Thomas Frank is unlikely to make wholesale changes to his starting eleven, although Saman Ghoddos could replace Tarique Fosu-Henry in midfield.

Henrik Dalsgaard, Shandon Baptiste, Rico Henry, and Josh Dasilva remain sidelined to the Bees.

Cardiff team news vs Brentford

Goalkeeper Alex Smithies should keep his place in goal after replacing Dillon Phillips against Reading. Josh Murphy could replace Joe Ralls in attacking midfield.

Sean Morrison, Joe Bennett, Lee Tomlin, and Joel Bagan remain sidelined through injury.

Veteran defender Sol Bamba has returned to light training, less than three months after being diagnosed with cancer.
