Bournemouth vs Middlesbrough: Match preview

Championship football returns on Friday night following the international break. Bournemouth welcome Middlesbrough to the Vitality Stadium.

Bournemouth suffered a 3-0 home defeat to Premier League side Southampton in the FA Cup in their last match two weeks ago. The Cherries’ did win their most recent league match, however, beating fellow promotion hopefuls Swansea City 3-0 at the Vitality, thanks to goals from Philip Billing and Arnaut Danjuma Groeneveld.

Their latest victory leaves Bournemouth 7th in the table, one place and three points behind a playoff spot – crucially, they have a game in hand over the two sides directly above them.

Jonathan Woodgate’s side have the fifth-best home record in the league, winning nine and drawing three of their 19 matches at the Vitality Stadium. Only two teams have scored more goals at home than the Cherries (33).

Prior to the international break, Boro suffered a 1-0 defeat away to Bournemouth. Middlesbrough are 9th in the table on 56 points, three behind Bournemouth and six behind the playoff spots.

Middlesbrough’s away record ranks 12 in the Championship, with six wins and five draws from their 19 matches away from home. Boro have both scored and conceded 21 goals on their travels.

These two sides played out a 1-1 draw at the Riverside in September. Dominic Solanke opened the scoring in the first half before Boro equalised through a Marcus Browne header in the final 10 minutes.

Middlesbrough have only won one of their last eight matches against Bournemouth.

In his playing days, Bournemouth manager Jonathan Woodgate made over 100 appearances for Middlesbrough over two spells.

Bournemouth team news vs Middlesbrough

Jonathan Woodgate could make a couple of changes from Bournemouth’s FA Cup defeat two weeks ago. Lloyd Kelly and Jefferson Lerma should return to the starting eleven.

Dominic Solanke will lead Bournemouth’s attack, flanked by Atletico Madrid loanee Rodrigo Riquelme.

Jack Stacey is set to continue at right-back as Adam Smith’s knock is worse than initially expected.

Joining Smith on the sidelines are Lewis Cook, David Brooks, and Junior Stanislas.

Middlesbrough team news vs Bournemouth

George Saville could return to Boro’s XI, which could see Neil Warnock revert to a 4-3-3 formation.

Ashley Fletcher and Neeskens Kebano will be pushing for recalls.

Marcus Browne and Anfernee Dijksteel are ruled out through injury.
