Barnsley vs Swansea: Match preview

Barnsley welcome Swansea City to Oakwell on Monday night for the first leg of their play-off semi-final tie.

Barnsley surpassed expectations this season, finishing 5th in the table on 78 points. Bear in mind that Barnsley finished 21st last season and were tipped to be in another relegation battle this season.

The Tykes had the 6th best home record in the Championship this season, picking up 42 points from their 23 matches at home (the same number of points as Bournemouth and Swansea).

Barnsley are unbeaten in their last four matches at home, the most recent of which was a 2-2 draw against champions Norwich on the final day of the league campaign. Valerien Ismael’s side have only lost one of their last 11 Championship matches at Oakwell.

Barnsley have been something of a yo-yo club in recent seasons, jumping up and down between the Championship and League 1. Barnsley have only competed in one Premier League campaign, back in 1997-98. They were relegated after finishing 19th and have not returned since.

Swansea finished 4th in the table, one place and two points above Barnsley – although they didn’t enjoy the best of run-ins. The Welsh side managed just one win in their final five matches.

Swansea’s away record ranked 4th in the league this season, with 11 wins and five draws from their 23 matches on the road. Only two teams managed to concede fewer goals away from home than Swansea (23).

Steve Coopers’ side did lose their last away match 2-0 at Watford on the final day of the season – although they had already qualified for the play-offs at that point.

Swansea spent seven consecutive seasons in the Premier League between 2011 and 2018. They came close to making a return last season but lost their play-off semi-final tie with Brentford 3-2 on aggregate.

Swansea are unbeaten in their last 12 matches against Barnsley, a run stretching back to 2008. Steve Cooper’s side did the double over Barnsley this season, winning 2-0 both home and away. Jamal Lowe scored in both matches.

These two sides will meet again at the weekend for the second leg at the Liberty Stadium. The winners of the two-legged tie will face one of Brentford or Bournemouth in the play-off final at Wembley on 29 May.

Barnsley team news vs Swansea

Barnsley only have one confirmed absentee heading into Monday’s first leg, with defender Ben Williams sidelined. Alex Mowatt missed the game against Norwich on the final day with a groin problem but is expected to feature against Swansea.

Conor Chaplin and Daryl Dike are expected to partner Cauley Woodrow in Barnsley’s attack.

Toby Sibbick is likely to drop down to the bench, while Michael Sollbauer could return to the starting eleven.

Swansea team news vs Barnsley

Conor Hourihane is set to face his former club. The 30-year-old midfielder made over 120 appearances for Barnsley before joining Aston Villa in 2017.

Korey Smith is another former Barnsley player on Swansea’s books, having had a brief loan spell at the Tykes in 2012.
