Barnsley vs Middlesbrough: Match preview

Barnsley welcome Middlesbrough to Oakewell on Saturday.

Barnsley returned to winning ways on Monday with a 2-1 away win at Luton Town. Daryl Dike netted either side of half time to help the Tykes to all three points.

Valérien Ismael’s side are 5th in the table on 68 points following Monday’s win. Barnsley are on course to finish in the playoffs, but with just three points separating them and Bournemouth, Barnsley can’t afford to slip up in their final six matches if they are to make a shock return to the Premier League.

Barnsley have the 7th best home record in the division, winning 10 and drawing five of their 20 matches at Oakwell.

Boro held Watford to a 1-1 draw at the Riverside on Monday, with Yannick Bolasie netting a second-half equaliser.

Monday’s draw leaves Boro 10th in the table on 57 points, nine away from the playoff spots – which, with six games to go, are looking out of reach.

Middlesbrough away record ranks 14th in the Championship this season, with six wins and five draws from their 20 matches on the road. Boro haven’t struggled for goals on the road (22), but their problem away from home has been their defence.

Neil Warnock’s side have lost three on the spin away from home, with their most recent away defeat being a 3-1 loss at Bournemouth.

Middlesbrough beat Barnsley 2-1 at the Riverside Stadium in October’s reverse fixture. Jonny Howson and Chuba Akpom gave Boro at 2-0 lead before Cauley Woodrow scored a penalty late on to halve the deficit.

Barnsley team news vs Middlesbrough

Daryl Dike will keep his place up front after netting a brace against Luton on Monday. Carlton Morris will be pushing for a recall, with Victor Adeboyejo likely to make way.

Liam Kitching, Herbie Kane, and Ben Williams are sidelined.

Barnsley forward George Miller was on Middlesbrough’s books for part of the 2017-18 season but only managed to make one appearance.

Middlesbrough team news vs Barnsley

Sam Morsey will miss the remainder of the campaign after suffering a ligament injury on Monday.

Yannick Bolasie could return to the side, as could striker Ashley Fletcher.

Dael Fry, Marcus Browne, Marcus Tavernier, and Anfernee Dijksteel are injury absentees for Neil Warnock’s side.

Ashley Fletcher scored five goals for Barnsley during a loan spell at the club in 2016. In the same season, Sam Morsey made 14 appearances for Barnsley while on loan from Wigan.
