Will it be the night Barcelona’s knockout phase streak comes to an end?

Since 2003/04, Barça have not played in a lower-tier of European competition, winning the Champions League four times in this period.

But, the Blaugrana’s place in this season’s round of 16 is under serious threat.

The Catalan giants made the worst possible start to this campaign, losing 3-0 twice, to Bayern at home and Benfica at Estádio da Luz.

They did then stabilise with back-to-back narrow 1-0 wins over Dynamo Kyiv; Gerard Piqué and Ansu Fati the goal scorers.

So, this set up a possibly do or die clash with Benfica at Camp Nou but the goalless scoreline means it is still in the balance.

Óscar Mingueza had a late header disallowed before Haris Seferovic, somehow, didn’t win it for Benfica, rounding Marc-André ter Stegen but firing wide.

So, as it stands, Barça have seven points and Benfica are on five but, potentially crucially, the Portuguese giants have a superior head-to-head.

If Benfica beat Dynamo Kyiv in Lisbon, Barcelona must win in Bavaria or they will drop into the Europa League preliminary knockout round.

Will they avoid disaster and claim a famous victory?

For Bayern Munich meantime, no such problems as the’d already won the group after just four matches.

Last time out, in the pouring Ukrainian snow, they beat Dynamo Kyiv 2-1 with Robert Lewandowski and Kingsley Coman on target.

This makes it five wins out of five for Julian Nagelsmann’s side and Bayern are into the round of 16 for the 14th straight season.

The Bavarian giants actually hold the record for the best-ever Champions League group phase, winning all six with a +19 goal difference in 2019.

To match that, a win by three clear goals is needed and that certainly isn’t beyond them.

On Saturday, Bayern moved four points clear at the top of the Bundesliga, beating second-placed Borussia Dortmund 3-2 at Westfalenstadion.

Lewandowski and Coman doing the Der Klassiker damage.

Barcelona meanwhile lost for the first time under Xavi at the weekend, going down 1-0 to Real Betis at Camp Nou.

This leaves them seventh in La Liga, 16 points behind the leaders.

Will it be an historically catastrophic night for Barcelona?
