Shakhtar Donetsk vs Manchester City betting tips: Champions League match preview, predictions & odds

Shakhtar Donetsk vs Manchester City prediction: Shakhtar 1-2 Man City

Manchester City will look to take command of Group F with an important away win on Tuesday night.

Doing so won’t be easy, however. Shakhtar boast a brilliant record at home to English opposition, winning five and drawing two of their seven matches.

The Ukrainian side beat City 2-1 last year but have lost a number of key players since.

Shakhtar Donetsk vs Man City: Who will win?

Manchester City are 4/11 favourites to win on Tuesday night while Shakhtar Donetsk are 7/1. The draw is priced at 5/1.

Having been completely rested on Saturday, Raheem Sterling will almost certainly start from the off. The winger is 5/1 to score the opening goal of the game and 6/5 to net anytime.

As Pep Guardiola pointed out in his press conference, City are the best side in Europe in terms of shots. They’ve only managed to keep one clean sheet in their last five European away matches.

Shakhtar vs Man City Champions League match preview

Manchester City travel to Ukraine for their Champions League clash against Shakhtar Donetsk at the Donbass Arena on Tuesday night.

City are 2nd in Group F following their 2-1 away win at Hoffenheim at the start of October. City went behind in the first minute of the match but went on to win thanks to goals from Sergio Aguero and David Silva.

The result put an end to City’s four-match losing streak in the competition.

Shakhtar are on two points after drawing both matches so far. Paulo Fonesca’s side gave up a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 at Lyon. Junior Moraes scored both goals for Shakhtar.

League leaders

Both sides are looking a whole lot more convincing domestically.

Shakhtar are top of the pile in the Ukrainian Premier League, on 31 points after 12 matches. They picked up another win on Friday evening when Maycon scored a brilliant direct free-kick in their 1-0 win over Desna.

Manchester City’s unbeaten start to the Premier League season continued on Saturday.

Guardiola’s side romped to a 5-0 win over Burnley with goals from Aguero, Bernardo Silva, Fernandninho, Riyad Mahrez and Leroy Sane.

The Sky Blues are top of the table thanks to a superior goal difference to Liverpool. Both sides are on 23 points after 9 matches.

Although Shkhtar have had an extra day to recover, City should be well prepared, having already flown out to Ukraine on Sunday.

City have largely failed to carry their domestic form into Europe since last season’s group stage.

Shakhtar team news vs Man City

Taison is Shakhtar’s biggest injury concern.

His absence will likely see Alan Patrick move into the number 10 role, with Maycon partnering Taras Stepanenko in midfield.

Davit Khotcholav and Sergey Krivtsov will battle it out for a place in defence.

Man City team news vs Shakhtar

Kevin de Bruyne came off the bench to make his return from injury on Saturday. The midfielder is likely to be involved at some point again on Tuesday.

Raheem Sterling should start on the right after being rested on Saturday, which means Riyad Mahrez could miss out.

Guardiola may opt to start Gabriel Jesus ahead of Sergio Aguero, who has been City’s first-choice striker in the league this season.

Kyle Walker is in the travelling party after missing out on Saturday due to a minor injury. John Stones was fielded at right-back and is likely to give way, with Vincent Kompany set to partner Amyric Laporte.

Phil Foden and Brahim Diaz have also been named in the squad, while there is also a place for Oleksandr Zinchenko.

Fernandinho is set to face his former side, while Danilo, Ilkay Gundogan and Claudio Bravo remain sidelined through injury.
