RB Salzburg vs Bayern Munich betting tips: Champions League preview, predictions and odds

Bayern Munich have scored 92 goals in their last 27 Champions League matches. However, they've only kept eight clean sheets in their last 31 games in the knockout phase.

So, Bayern Munich to win and both teams to score is 6/4.

Robert Lewandowski has 65 Champions League goals to his name, netting 37 times in his last 30 appearances in the competition. He is 2/1 to break the deadlock and 4/11 to add to his tally.

Match preview

The Bundesliga champions take on their Austrian Bundesliga equivalents in this mismatch Champions League round of 16 tie.

Bayern Munich are aiming to become champions of Europe for the seventh time this season having won this trophy as recently as 2020.

Last season, they were unable to retain their title, demolishing Lazio at this juncture before going out on away goals to Paris Saint-Germain.

But, for the second time in three seasons, Bayern posted a perfect group phase record, winning all six matches and scoring 22 goals in the process.

Domestically, Julian Nagelsmann's side are six points clear at the top of the league, looking for a tenth title in a row, despite a shock defeat at the weekend.

On Saturday, they suffered their fourth Bundesliga defeat of the season, going down 4-2 to Bochum at Ruhrstadion, but it's unlikely to matter very much.

Having monopolised German trophies, it's European glory that Bayern are interested in so will they establish an insurmountable first leg advantage?

The same can be said of major honours in Austria when it comes to hosts Red Bull Salzburg.

Die Roten Bullen have now won eight successive Austrian titles and seven ÖFB-Cups in this time, last failing to reach the cup final in 2013.

Right now, they're 14 points clear at the top of the table following Friday night's comeback 2-1 victory over Rapid Wien.

But, in Europe, Salzburg are competing in the knockout phase for the very first time, having previously finished third in their group in 1995 and the last two seasons.

Matthias Jaissle's side had to overcome Brøndby in qualifying but then came second in their group, behind Lille, but above Sevilla and Wolfsburg.

On matchday six, Noah Okafor got the only goal as they beat the Spanish side 1-0 at home, thereby qualifying at their expense.

However, the draw hasn't been kind; when these two met in the group stages just last season, Bayern won both meetings, 6-2 and 3-1.

As the German champions return to Stadion Wals-Siezenheim, another emphatic away win would not be at all surprising.

RB Salzburg team news

Matthias Jaissle's side have only played twice since 11 December, beating LASK the cup and then Rapid Wien, so will be fresh if nothing else.

His team plays in a 4-3-1-2 shape with USA international Brenden Aaronson given a free role in behind the two centre-forwards.

Their star striker is 20 year old Karim Adeyemi who has scored 18 goals this season, including four in the Champions League.

The Germany international has to tread carefully in this first leg though as, if he was to be shown a yellow card, he'd be suspended for the return tie in the city of his birth.

Andreas Ulmer, Mohamed Camara and Nicolas Seiwald are the other players treading this particular tightrope.

Alongside Adeyemi, with Sékou Koïta and Benjamin Šeško injured, Noah Okafor could get the nod after he bagged the winner on matchday six.

Further back, Jérôme Onguéné has returned after representing Cameroon at the Africa Cup of Nations so could come in at the heart of defence.

Bayern Munich team news

Julian Nagelsmann's team too make the short 80 mile journey east without some of their key protagonists.

Manuel Neuer will miss this tie after undergoing knee surgery ten days ago and will be hoping there is a quarter-final tie for him to return too.

In his absence, Sven Ulreich will make just his fifth Bayern appearance in three seasons.

At the back, Alphonso Davies is also out due to myocarditis which was caused by his Covid-19 infection.

Without the Canadian, Lucas Hernandez will be deployed at left-back; the Frenchman is the only Bayern player one booking away from suspension.

In midfield, there's no Leon Goretzka nor Jamal Musiala but Joshua Kimmich is back after his own Covid-caused problems at the end of 2021.

Further forward, an outrageous quartet of Thomas Müller, Leroy Sané, Kingsley Coman and Serge Gnabry could all be in the starting XI.

That's without mentioning Robert Lewandowski who scored three times against RB Salzburg in last season's group phase.
