Real Madrid vs Inter Milan: Champions League Match preview

Real Madrid host Inter Milan on Tuesday night. The match will take place at the Alfredo Di Stefano Stadium, home of Real Madrid Castilla, while the Bernabeu undergoes extensive renovations.

On paper, Real Madrid and Inter Milan are the two big hitters in the group, but they head into the week fourth and third in Group B respectively – both without a win from their two matches.

Real Madrid suffered a shock 3-2 home defeat to Shakhtar Donetsk in their opening group game. Madrid were 3-0 down at the break but managed to restore some pride through goals from Luka Modric and Vinicius Junior. Real Madrid have failed to win any of their last three Champions League matches at home.

Madrid were 2-0 down in last week’s match at Borussia Monchengladbach, requiring two very late goals from Karim Benzema and Casemiro to salvage a point.

It should be noted that in between those two Champions League matches, Zinedine Zidane’s side beat Barcelona 3-1  away from home in El Clasico.

Eden Hazard scored his first goal in over a year as Real beat Huesca 4-1 on Saturday. Karim Benzema (2) and Fede Valverde also scored. The win leaves Madrid 2nd in La Liga, one point off leaders Real Sociedad, with a game in hand.

Inter Milan are unbeaten in the four matches they have played since losing to AC Milan in the derby earlier in the month – although three of those matches have been draws. Inter drew 2-2 in their group stage opener with Monchengladbach and were held to a 0-0 draw at Shakhtar last week.

Inter slipped to 6th in Serie A following a 2-2 draw against Parma on Saturday. Inter were 2-0 down after 62 minutes but clawed their way to a point thanks to goals from Marcelo Brozovic and Ivan Perisic.

Surprisingly, Real Madrid’s last competitive fixture against Inter was back in 1998 in the group stage of the Champions League.

Real Madrid team news vs Inter Milan

Dani Carvajal remains sidelined with a knee injury and is only expected to return to action in December. Fellow right-back Alvaro Odriozola is also ruled out.

Injuries to Madrid’s first- and second-choice right-backs has seen Lucas Vazquez fill in there in recent matches. However, Vazquez himself is now a doubt after suffering a muscular injury against Huesca.

Following his goal at the weekend, Eden Hazard should keep his place in the side at the expense of Vinicius Junior.

Ferland Mendy and Toni Kroos came on in the second half against Huesca and should be recalled to the starting eleven, with Marcelo and Luka Modric possibly making way. Raphael Varane was an unused substitute on Saturday and should come in for Eder Militao.

Martin Odegaard and Nacho Fernandez are further injury absentees for Los Blancos.

Inter Milan team news vs Real Madrid

Antonio Made six changes at the weekend and is likely to revert back to a similar side to the one that draw in Donetsk last week.

Christian Eriksen was criticised for his performance against Parma and could make way. Ashley Young and Arturo Vidal could be handed recalls after starting Saturday’s match on the bench.

Alessandro Bastoni and Danilo D’Ambrosio are likely to replace Aleksandar Kolarov and Andrea Ronocchia in Inter’s three-man defence.

Inter Milan will be without talismanic striker Romelu Lukaku, who recently picked up an abductor muscle injury. Lautaro Martinez is expected to lead the line on his own on Tuesday, as he did at the weekend.

Achraf Hakimi is set to face his former side.

Milan Skriniar, Alexis Sanchez, and Stefano Sensi are all still injured. Matias Vecino is sidelined with a long-term knee injury.
