Betting prediction: Real Madrid 2-1 Atalanta

Real Madrid utterly dominated Atalanta last time out in the first-leg in Italy, holding Gian Piero Gasperini’s men to just two shots and only 31% of the ball. By contrast, Zinedine Zidane’s men only managed a single goal despite registering nineteen shots, leaving an avenue for advancement still available to La Dea. Still and yet, Madrid should progress here but Atalanta do have the ability to find a goal through their own means given how good they can be, especially needing a goal.

Real Madrid vs Atalanta: Recommended bets

Result/Both Teams to Score: Real Madrid – Yes

Such was the dominance in their first-leg win over Atalanta that it is hard to look past Real Madrid to do the same this go around, even if it is not a completely one-sided affair, which it likely will not be. Atalanta need a goal here, whereas in the first-leg they could have settled for a 0-0 draw and banked on going through on away goals in Spain. Madrid will have Karim Benzema back as well, and many of those chances from the first-leg could fall to him or come through him making Los Blancos that much more dangerous.

To Score First: Karim Benzema

His goals have been vital for Real Madrid; not just all season, but for the entirety of his career in the Spanish capital even when Cristiano Ronaldo was at the club. A key figure in how Real operate in the final-third and probably the only clinical player at the club, he is an almost nailed-on bet to grab a goal if he is in Zidane’s matchday XI.

Real Madrid vs Atalanta: Match preview

Los Blancos have been marching to the right tune of late both domestically and in Europe, going undefeated in their last eight across all competitions. By proxy, they make an opponent no one ever wants to face in the Champions League considering their pedigree in the competition, but to pull it back against Madrid, in Madrid, is another task altogether.

Madrid supporters will be bolstered by Karim Benzema being fit and available for the second-leg, after missing out on the first and having to live with Isco deputising for the Frenchman in a false nine role. A Madrid that has begun to roll again after a period where they only won once in five before their current undefeated run should give Zidane additional confidence during a season where many have thought that the iconic Frenchman may be at the end of his Spanish journey.

Further questions around the club as a whole exist given their horrendous financial situation, one that may see multiple big names head for the exit row in the Santiago Bernabeu. A push in the Champions League in conjunction with renewed hope as Real is still alive in the La Liga title race could be just the tonic given what the alternatives could present.

Atalanta have it all to play for in the second leg

They may be down in the tie overall, but Atalanta is hardly out of contention as they look to storm the Bernabeu in the Spanish capital on Tuesday. Dropping a result 1-0 at home is hardly the end of the world, especially considering Gian Piero Gasperini’s men went down to ten men just seventeen minutes into proceedings when Remo Freuler was given his marching orders. But it was the nature of their stubborn performance that can give the La Dea faithful something to be confident about.

It took a stunning strike from Ferland Mendy to secure a 1-0 first-leg win for Real on their travels, as the Spanish giants kept the Bergamo-based outfit under siege for 70-odd minutes on their own patch. But that simple fact should boost the confidence of many.

Atalanta now has to be a bit more direct, with the hand brake nowhere near deployed. Under Gasperini, their attacking qualities could be fully unleashed on Tuesday, but in typical fashion, they will likely still remain organized without the ball. Their full attacking complement will be available for selection as well, and it could once again come down to the key striking partnership of Colombian duo Luis Muriel and Duván Zapata. There is enough about this Atalanta side that could perpetrate a shock result against a club that own this competition, but anything is possible in Europe after all.

Real Madrid team news vs Atalanta

The big news for Madrid is that Eden Hazard is once again injured.

Real Madrid confirmed that Hazard has suffered psoas muscle injury which reports say could rule him out for 4-6 weeks.

Zinedine Zidane will not be faced with too many selection concerns for Atalanta’s visit to the Spanish capital.

Mariano and Daniel Carvajal are the only absentees through injury.

The big blow comes via Casemiro being unavailable through yellow card accumulation, but he can now welcome back Sergio Ramos.

Gian Piero Gasperini will be without both Hans Hateboer and Bosko Sutalo, who are unavailable through injury.

The Italian headmaster will also be stripped of Swiss international Remo Freuler, who was sent off in the first-leg when he saw a straight red.

Berat Djimsiti is listed as a doubt after being subbed-off at the weekend against Spezia after picking up a knock.
