RB Leipzig vs Paris Saint-Germain: Semi-final match preview

RB Leipzig take on Paris Saint-Germain in the first of the Champions League semi-finals on Tuesday night. Like every match since the quarter-finals, Tuesday’s game will take place behind closed doors in Lisbon, Portugal.

RB Leipzig overcame the odds by knocking out Atletico Madrid in the last round. Dani Olmo opened the scoring for Leipzig before Joao Felix equalised from the penalty spot.

The match looked to be heading to extra time but American Tyler Adams netted the winner with minutes to go. Dayot Upamecano put in a Man of the Match performance at the back.

Many had ruled out Leipzig’s chances after they lost their top scorer Timo Werner to Chelsea last month. Werner scored 34 goals for Leipzig this season, including four in Europe.

This is only Leipzig’s second-ever season in the Champions League – and their fourth in Europe overall.

The club was only founded in 2009. And while they do have substantial corporate backing, their achievements over the last few seasons should not be underestimated.

PSG came from behind to beat Atalanta 2-1 last Wednesday. Thomas Tuchel’s side scored two dramatic goals in second-half stoppage time to break Atalanta’s hearts.

Since their big-money takeover in 2011, the Champions League has been the won trophy that has evaded the Parisians. This is their first semi-finals appearances since 1996.

There is no second leg so a winner must be decided on the night. Extra time will be played if the scores are level after 90 minutes.

The other semi-final also has representatives of Germany and France. Bayern Munich face Lyon in Wednesday’s semi for the remaining spot in Sunday’s final.

RB Leipzig team news vs Paris Saint-Germain

Julian Nagelsmann nearly has a fully-fit squad to choose from. Ibrahima Konata is the side’s only injury absentee ahead of Tuesday’s game.

RB Leipzig could name the same eleven that started against Atletico, but that doesn’t mean Nagelsmann is short of options. Match winner Tyler Adams could be rewarded with a start, while Patrik Schick will be hoping to replace Yussuf Poulsen.

Nordi Mukiele is an option if Nagelsmann opts to field three at the back.

With Werner no longer at the club, Marcel Sabitzer is Leipzig’s current leading scorer with 16 goals this season.

Christopher Nkunku is set to face his former club.

July signings Hwang Hee-Chan and Benjamin Henrichs are ineligible to feature.

Paris Saint-Germain team news vs RB Leipzig

Goalkeeper Keylor Navas is a major doubt after picking up a hamstring injury that forced him off against Atalanta. Sergio Rico is expected to start in goal for Paris.

Kylian Mbappe played the final 30 minutes of the quarter-final and should be fit enough to start on Tuesday, so Pablo Sarabia should make way.

Angel Di Maria returns from suspension and is likely come straight into the starting eleven.

Despite his heroics last time out, Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting is likely to be used as an impact player once again. The same goes for Julian Draxler and Leandro Paredes.

Marco Verratti could feature on the bench after missing out last week, but he won’t be fit to start. Layvin Kurzawa will miss out altogether.
