Betting prediction: PSG 3 – 2 Manchester United

PSG welcomes MaAnchester United to the Parc des Princes in Paris on Tuesday for this UEFA Champions League match.

Tuesday’s match will only be the third competitive meeting of these two teams in European football. The previous two matches were the memorable last-sixteen clashes just 18-months ago which saw PSG dumped out of the Champions League, after slumping to a defeat in Paris.

This continued United’s strong record when travelling to France, where they now have 6 wins and 2 defeats from 14 matches on French soil.

The Parisians have a strong record when hosting English opponents. Chelsea are the only other English side to win in Paris, defeating PSG 0-3 here in the Group stage of the Champions League back in 2004. Their full home record against English opposition is 4 wins, 4 draws and 2 defeats from 10 matches.

PSG vs Manchester United: What are the betting odds?

PSG have won each of their last 3 home matches, without conceding a goal. They also had a perfect record of 4 wins from 4 matches in Paris in the Champions League last season. This sees them start the match as huge 11/20 on favourites.

The Parisians have drawn 40% of their home matches when hosting English opponents. United have drawn 43% of their matches as visitors to French opposition. This makes the odds of 18/5 for PSG and Man Utd cancelling each other out on Tuesday seem very appealing.

United won on their last visit Parc des Princes to face PSG back in 2019. Despite this, they start the match as the 9/2 underdogs.

PSG vs Manchester United: Recommended bets

101 Great Goals’ prediction of PSG 3 – 2 Man United is available at odds of 18/1.

PSG’s last home victory in this competition was during the last-16 stage back in March by a scoreline of 2-0. A repeat of this score on Tuesday is available at odds of 17/2.

Man United’s last win at Parc des Princes was back in February 2019 by a 1-3 scoreline. You can back them at 33/1 for the same scoreline here on Tuesday.

The only previous match between these sides here was a 4-goal-game. You can back another high scoring game here on Tuesday with odds of 1/2 for over 2.5 goals.

Kylian Mbappé (above) looked back to his electrifying best at the weekend, scoring a brace against Nimes. The French international is the favourite at 10/3 to score the game’s opener on Tuesday. Or 8/11 to bag a goal at any time during the game against Manchester United.

Odion Ighalo hasn’t been involved much for United in the Premier League this season. His 9-minute cameo in the 1-3 defeat to Palace is his only league action for the club so far. The Nigerian also failed to find the net in his starts in the Carabao Cup against Luton and Brighton. Despite this, Ighalo is the favourite of those in red to get on the scoresheet at 2/1. You can back the 31-year-old at 15/2 to grab the game’s opening goal.

PSG vs Manchester United: Match preview

PSG have long carried the label of being a ‘mentally weak’ side. Whether they are being called ‘fragile’, ‘primadonnas’, or ‘bottlers’, the message is clear: this expensively assembled side respond poorly when things don’t go their way.

They threw away a 3-1 first-leg lead against Chelsea in the Quarter-Finals of this competition in 2014. PSG then lost at the same stage of the 2015 competition 1-3 to Barcelona in Paris. They then famously threw away a 4-0 first-leg lead against the same opponents in 2017, losing 6-1 in Barcelona.

The Parisians then lost in 4-1 on aggregate to Madrid a year later in the Round of 16. Tuesday’s opponents, Manchester United, then eliminated them at the same stage the following year. They overturned a 0-2 defeat at Old Trafford, winning 1-3 in Paris. Later that same season, PSG almost threw away the Ligue 1 title, being routed 5-1 by Lille in the penultimate game of the season.

Paris Saint-Germain: 2019/20 Champions League Finalists

PSG’s impressive run to the final last season should have consigned such labels to the bin. However, after losing their opening two matches of the Ligue 1 campaign, the second of which ended in a mass-brawl with Marseille on the pitch, question marks over the mental strength of this side have resurfaced.

Of course, PSG have responded by winning 5 matches on the bounce, scoring 16 goals in the process while letting in just 1 at the other end. This will inevitably lead their detractors to ask how good these sides are that they steamrollered? How do the likes of SCO Angers or Nîmes Olympique stand up in comparison to a Premier League team?

PSG’s opponents last weekend, Nîmes, are valued at just £54.8m by Transfermarkt.com. While the Premier League’s bottom placed side, Fulham, would rank as the 7th most valuable club in Ligue 1, with a value of £196.9m.

This suggests the average quality level in Ligue 1 lags far behind that of the Premier League. Which makes judging this PSG team and their recent results very difficult. They certainly have quality players throughout the team and could put Manchester United to the sword in the same way Spurs did recently.

However, if things go against them, just as they did in this competition 18 months ago against United, how would they respond? The answer to that question could likely decide who wins this match and possibly even Champions League group.

PSG team news vs Manchester United

The big news out of Paris before this match is that Neymar would be available to PSG. The Brazilian international missed their match against Nimes at the weekend due to fitness concerns following his international duty with Brazil the week prior.

Ángel Di María (above) is currently half-way through a 4-game Ligue 1 suspension for his part in the brawl against Marseille. However, he will be available for selection on Tuesday and is expected to start for the Parisians.

Layvin Kurzawa is in a similar situation, having missed PSG’s last five domestic matches through suspension. The 28-year-old left-back is expected to replace Mitchel Bakker.

Danilo Pereira, who was signed earlier this month from FC Porto, will have to wait to make his PSG debut. The 29-year-old midfielder is currently under quarantine.

Juan Bernat, Thilo Kehrer and Marquinhos are all set to miss out due to injury.

Mauro Icardi, Julian Draxler and Marco Verratti all face late fitness tests to assess whether they can play any part in the match for the Parisians. The trio all missed the match at the weekend.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer Manchester United

Manchester United team news vs PSG

Similar to Di María and Kurzawa, Anthony Martial is currently serving a domestic suspension after his red card against Tottenham Hotspur. He is available for selection in the Champions League though, and is expected to start here.

It was confirmed on Monday that Edinson Cavani hadn’t travelled with the squad. Therefore, the Uruguayan won’t be making his United debut against his former club. Mason Greenwood and Jesse Lingard have also been excluded from the squad.

With Harry Maguire, Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo and Eric Bailly all missing for United, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could be fielding a makeshift defence. Axel Tuanzebe could make his first start there in nearly a year. Scott McTominay, Nemanja Matic, Luke Shaw and Aaron Wan-Bissaka are other potential options there for Ole.
