Betting prediction: PSG 2-1 Bayern Munich

PSG are just two halves of football away from righting the wrongs of last season’s Champions League final loss to Bayern Munich, and potentially putting them on course to – finally – lift the biggest club trophy in Europe for the first time in their history.

Bayern, bereft of Robert Lewandowski, Serge Gnabry, and potentially a host of other key players, have it all to do after surrendering three goals at the Allianz Arena in the first leg and are faced with a two-goal margin of victory being their only pathway to progression into the semi-finals.

PSG are in patchy of domestic form in Ligue 1, but should still have enough to complete the job on the night and send the pre-tournament favorites crashing out in what could be Hansi Flick’s final season in charge in Bavaria.

PSG vs Bayern Munich: Recommended bets

To Score first: Kylian Mbappé

This matchup and all things considered with it is the perfect chance for another influential evening perpetrated by Kylian Mbappé. Bayern are in need of not just a win, but by a two-goal margin. In that light, the Bavarian’s must open themselves up a little more than they would be comfortable with doing given some of their potential selection headaches. In looking for goals, the pace of the French prodigy can once again come to the fore and him opening the scoring via a counter-attacking scenario as Bayern push to take control of proceedings is a scenario that is quite possible.

Result/Both Teams to Score: PSG – Yes

It is doubtful that anyone sees this ending in a clean sheet for either side, even if Bayern does tap into their machine-like mentality and end up pulling off a reversal that sees PSG come up short yet again after winning the first leg. Keeping the Bavarian giants off the scoresheet is borderline impossible even without Robert Lewandowski, and much of the same can be said for a PSG side that has all their key attacking assets fit and available. Baring another European collapse, PSG should see this through.

PSG vs Bayern Munich: Match preview

The question around Kylian Mbappé was never if he was going to be a world-beater or not, but rather, how long would it take for him to hit the highest level of the game in Europe. It is fair to say, that the son of Paris is now firmly rooted as the best young player in the world. But in his ascension to the highest rung of the sport comes additional speculation on whether the French international will one day leave the city of his birth and head off to make his name at one of football’s few truly gargantuan entities; the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona.

His club-mate and Brazilian star boy Neymar recently heaped praise and thanks on his attacking partner, crediting him as a chief reason why he feels settled and adapted to life at PSG and to life in France as a whole. With Mbappé and Neymar, PSG truly has one of the most gifted attacking duos in the world, and Neymar’s happiness and potential willingness to stay could play a vital role in convincing Mbappé to do the same long term. But what could go even further in aiding that possibility, beyond a budding partnership on the pitch and friendship of it with the Brazilia, is PSG propelling themselves into the truly elite category; a global powerhouse.

The 1-0 loss to Bayern in last seasons Champions League final was not just a gut punch and opportunity lost, but a sign that they are close to achieving what even Pep Guardiola has not done despite his work at Manchester City; or when he was at Bayern, for that matter. To knock out the Rekordmeister on Tuesday night and once again get one step closer to European glory – in a campaign that has the possibility of ending in the promised land – would cement his legacy as part of the next wave to take up the mantel that will soon be left by both Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

But as a Parisian who holds the city, and its biggest club, so close to his heart, the greatest possible success could be reason enough to continue to build greatness at a club that wishes to eventually be identified as one of the biggest in the world. To win the Champions League with PSG would mean he would have nothing left to win in the French capital, but if that was the only mentality that mattered, Messi would have left Barcelona years ago. Kylian Mbappé still has it all to play for, and whether or not PSG goes on to win it all, we could be witnessing the chief architect in the rise of another club to dizzying heights.

Bayern Munich hoping to exploit PSG’s weaknesses again

When you are Bayern Munich, it is almost always a guarantee that when you score multiple goals in any given match that you run out winners. This was not the case in the first-leg against PSG at the Allianz Arena, when an uncharacteristic performance at the back saw the Bavarians surrender three to the Parisian outfit who is determined to set the record straight after losing last seasons final to Hansi Flick’s men.

But the overall performance from Bayern was not a poor one, and that is a notion that keeper and club captain Manuel Neuer wanted to ram home in his comments in the run-up to proceedings at the Parc des Princes. Despite the 3-2 scoreline and advantage PSG, Bayern creative five-times more chances than their French counterparts, while controlling ~64% of the possession, and this was without both Robert Lewandowski and Serge Gnabry in the matchday XI. Bayern is likely to come at PSG in a similar fashion but will have to hope that while they aim to hit PSG in their Achilles heel, that they do not switch off at the back and succumb to the lightning-quick counter-attacks that PSG is capable of putting on at a moments notice.

They may have bagged three in Bavaria in the first leg, but Mbappé and company managed just six total shots against the German giants and were lucky enough to be clinical on the night. Mauricio Pochettino could well be happy to deploy similarly again, giving Bayern the lion’s share of the ball and sucker them into where they leave space behind for the likes of Mbappé, Neymar, and Angel Di María to exploit once more.

With Bayern needing to win by any two-goal margin to reverse their fortunes, patience will certainly need to be a necessary virtue on the night, which is another reality Neuer mentioned in his comments. Chances are sure to come for the Germans without having to force the issue too early or even too often, as the nature of their ability to turn the screw against anyone in Europe is second-to-none in recent seasons. And considering PSG have their own struggle sat the back both with missing personnel and inconsistent performances across the backline, there is still more than enough firepower available to Flick through Leroy Sané, Kingsley Coman, and Thomas Müller to find the goals necessary to pull off the reversal. Should Bayern successfully climb back and progress, they would once again be considered favourites for winning their second Champions League trophy in as many seasons, doing only what only a handful of clubs – including themselves – have managed to do before.

PSG team news vs Bayern Munich

Mauricio Pochettino will have two guaranteed selection issues as both Marquinhos and Juan Bernat are guaranteed to be unavailable for PSG as they welcome Bayern to Paris.

Keylor Navas is listed as a doubt but is still expected to be fit and available for service on Tuesday.

Mauro Icardi and Layvin Kurzawa are also doubts, but if they do not pass late assessments, their inability to be included will not have a massive bearing on what is expected from the French outfit overall.

Bayern Munich team news vs PSG

Things have gone from bad to worse for Hansi Flick as Bayern Munich looks to reverse their fortunes from the first leg. The former German national team assistant manager could face a massive selection issue with potentially up to ten players unavailable.

Flick is sure to still be without Robert Lewandowski, who is a long-term absentee. He is also guaranteed to be without the services of Douglas Costa, Corentin Tolisso, and Serge Gnabry.

Kingsley Coman is listed as a doubt but is still expected to be available Tuesday night, but Jérôme Boateng, Lucas Hernández, and Niklas Süle are also all doubts for selection in the back four.

Leon Goretzka and Marc Roca could fail to make appearances as well.
