Paris Saint-Germain vs Manchester City betting tips: Champions League preview, predictions and odds

Not the start to, what they hope will be, a memorable Champions League adventure for Paris Saint-Germain.

A fortnight ago, PSG deployed their new front three for the very first time: Kylian Mbappé, Neymar and, of course, Lionel Messi.

It was all going to plan when Ander Herrera fired les Rouge et Bleu 1-0 in front at Jan Breydel Stadium.

But, Club Brugge equalised shortly after and, in truth, it was the Belgian champions who deserved to win that matchday one fixture.

1-1 it finished but that was largely thanks to Keylor Navas’ heroics in the PSG goal.

Without being too disparaging, if you can’t beat Brugge, you’re not likely get very far in this competition.

From the moment Qatar Sports Investments bought the club, it’s been clear that their ambition is to win the Champions League.

PSG came close in 2020, seeing off Dortmund, Atalanta and RB Leipzig but suffering a heartbreaking 1-0 defeat to Bayern Munich in the final.

They then got to the semi-finals again last season, overcoming Barcelona and Bayern, before being swatted aside 4-1 by Manchester City.

Now, having brought in a whole host of superstars, not least, arguably, the greatest player of all time, PSG are expected to finally go all the way.

On Saturday night, Mauricio Pochettino’s side continued their perfect start to the Ligue 1 season, making it eight wins out of eight.

Idrissa Gana Gueye opened the scoring with a rocket before Julian Draxler sealed the 2-0 victory over Montpellier, smashing in from close-range.

But, given that les Parisiens have lifted 27 of the last 32 trophies on offer in France, this is only to be expected.

The Champions League is, and will continue to be, where this club is judged.

PSG have won 36 of their last 53 group phase games and, of course, are expected to sail through to the knockout phase.

But, having dropped points against Brugge, they’re under pressure for their next four fixtures which are against Man City and RB Leipzig.

Will the French side’s season come to life at Parc des Princes?

Will Man City win in Paris again?

As for Manchester City, this is a huge week for them but it got off to the best possible start on Saturday.

At the weekend, Man City took on European Champions and Premier League leaders Chelsea at Stamford Bridge

The first half was remarkable in its uneventfulness but, just after the break, the Citizens took the leader through Gabriel Jesus’ deflected effort.

Pep Guardiola’s side then saw it out to leave West London with a relatively comfortable 1-0 victory.

This means the champions have taken 13 points from the last 15 available, only slipping up at home to Southampton with a goalless draw ten days ago.

Also, unlike their Parisian hosts, Manchester City started their Champions League campaign with a win and a spectacular one at that.

A fortnight ago, the Citizens beat RB Leipzig 6-3 at the Etihad, their highest-scoring European game of all-time.

Nathan Aké opened the scoring with a header before a comical Nordi Mukiele own goal and an emphatic Riyāḍ Maḥrez penalty saw them 3-1 up at half time.

The hosts scored thrice more after the interval with Jack Grealish curling into the far corner before João Cancelo and Jesus sealed the win late on.

That means Man City have won 14 of their last 18 Champions League group games, last losing in September 2018 to Lyon.

With a double-header against Club Brugge to come, Man City look likely to reach the round of 16 for a ninth straight season.

Before then though, on Sunday in fact, the Sky Blues travel to Anfield to take on Liverpool.

In the space of eight days, they face away games at Chelsea, PSG and then Liverpool; the toughest week in world football?

Will Man City leave Paris clear at the top of Group A?

Mauricio Pochettino has some key decisions to make for this huge clash, not least in goal.

Keylor Navas is the established number one but Euro 2020 Player of the Tournament Gianluigi Donnarumma arrived from A.C. Milan this summer.

The Italian has played just twice for he new club so far, against Clermont Foot and Lyon, but could get the nod here.

In defence, Sergio Ramos is yet to make his PSG debut due to injury so Marquinhos will continue to captain the team alongside Presnel Kimpembe.

It’ll be two new recruits at full-back though with Achraf Hakimi on the right.

Over on the other side, Abdou Diallo will lose his place from the weekend with Nuno Mendes, who’s joined from Sporting CP, coming in.

In midfield, weekend scorer Idrissa Gana Gueye is suspended due to a red card he picked up against Man City in last season’s semi-finals.

So, Ander Herrera will anchor the midfield alongside Leandro Paredes with Georginio Wijnaldum in a more advanced role.

Danilo Pereira and Rafinha are alternatives; Marco Verratti hasn’t featured since a win at Reims last month due to a knee injury.

In attack, Lionel Messi hobbled off against Lyon nine days ago and has missed the subsequent meetings with Metz and Montpellier.

However, the six-times Ballon d’Or winner is expected to start here, even if he’s not up to speed.

He’ll complete a fearsome front three alongside Neymar and Kylian Mbappé who, between them, have scored 1,266 career goals and won 72 major honours.

Ángel Di María, like Gueye, is serving a suspension carried over from last season so Julian Draxler and Mauro Icardi will be the attacking options on the bench.

Manchester City starting XIs are famously difficult to predict, due to the fact that Pep Guardiola isn’t adverse to rotating his side.

However, despite this fixture falling between games with Chelsea and Liverpool, surely something akin to his best side will be on display here.

Goalkeeper Ederson will make his 200th Man City appearance, seeking his 101st clean sheet; not bad.

For one reason or another, it could be an unchanged back four in front of him.

In the middle, John Stones is yet to play a single minute for his club this season so Rúben Dias and Aymeric Laporte will continue.

At left-back, with Oleksandr Zinchenko injured and Ben Mendy unavailable, let’s say, João Cancelo could keep his place.

İlkay Gündoğan wasn’t even in the matchday squad at Chelsea so Rodri could continue at the base of midfield; Fernandinho is the alternative.

Further forward, Guardiola has a plethora of options, possibly only matched in world football by the hosts of this game.

Kevin De Bruyne is being eased back from an injuring but could start once more with Phil Foden also, potentially, returning to a midfield role.

Jack Grealish’s performances in sky blue mean he’s first choice on the left with Saturday’s goal scorer Gabriel Jesus remaining on the right.

Ferran Torres could return to lead the line with Bernardo Silva joining Raheem Sterling and Riyāḍ Maḥrez in reserve.

Will Manchester City leave Paris with six points out of six on the Champions League board?
