Lyon face Bayern Munich at the Estádio José Alvalade on Wednesday for this UEFA Champions League Semi-Final match.

Lyon reached this stage in the competition finishing as runners up in Group G to RB Leipzig. Benfica and Zenit both pushed them right to the end, ultimately finishing just one point behind the French side. They then eliminated Italian champions Juventus over two legs in the last 16.

On Saturday evening, in this very stadium, they produced one of the most memorable games of the tournament to see off Pep Guardiola’s expensively assembled Manchester City. For a team who make a net profit in the transfer market almost every window to defeat one that has a net-spend of over one-billion-pounds in the last ten years was a true footballing David vs Goliath story.

Their opponent on Wednesday is a true Goliath of the competition. Bayern enjoys almost complete dominance in the Bundesliga. They won their eighth consecutive title this season; their thirtieth overall. This puts them twenty-one titles ahead of the nearest side, 1. FC Nürnberg.

The Bavarians have shown a similar dominance in the Champions League this season. They were the only side to win all six of their group games, finishing on a maximum of eighteen points. Spurs, Olympiacos and Red Star Belgrade were all left trailing in their wake.

Bayern then demolished Chelsea in the last 16, winning both legs by three clear goals. Their performance against Barca though in the quarter-finals has left fans purring for me. Die Bayern sticking eight past ter Stegen in a stunning 8-2 victory.

The winner of this semi-final will face the winner of Leipzig vs PSG in the final, in the Estádio do Sport Lisboa e Benfica on the 23rd August.

Lyon vs Bayern Munich: What are the betting odds?

Wednesday’s 3-1 victory over Man City was Lyon’s first win post-restart. Lyon previous match was a 2-1 defeat in Turin to Juventus. However, they progressed to the Quarter Final stage on away goals. This sees them start this semi-final as huge underdogs, at 11/1, to win the match in 90 minutes.

Three of Lyon’s last four matches against German opposition have ended in a stalemate. Odds of 13/2 are available for Lyon to drag this match into extra time.

Bayern are aiming to make history in the Champions League on Wednesday evening. A win against Lyon would see them set a new record for the most consecutive wins in a campaign, with ten. Die Bayern are the odds-on favourites at 1/5 to win this match in normal time.

Lyon vs Bayern Munich: Recommended bets

Lyon are the lowest goalscorers remaining in the competition, with just fourteen goals, or 1.56 per game. Bayern are 11/10 to keep a clean sheet on Wednesday evening.

Memphis Depay is Lyon’s top scorer in the Champions League this campaign. He has six goals in the competition so far and is 3/1 to get on the scoresheet for Lyon here.

One-third of the Netherlands international’s goals this season have been the opening goal in the game. He is 12/1 to open the scoring against Bayern.

Bayern are the top scorers in the competition this season, with thirty-nine goals already. This gives us some huge odds on Lyon keeping a clean sheet, at 16/1.

Robert Lewandowski is the clear favourite to open the scoring at 6/4. Or, you can back him to add to his fourteen Champions League goals at any time during the match, at 2/9.

Thomas Müller drew first blood against Barca on Friday. It was only the third time the German international has opened the scoring for Bayern this season. Müller is 9/2 to break the deadlock on Wednesday evening. Or 10/11 to score at any time.

Lyon vs Bayern Munich: Match betting preview

Lyon are the next side to attempt to survive Bayern’s irresistible attacking force.

As mentioned, the German champions are the top scorers in the competition this season. If they maintain their average of four+ goals per game, they are on course to set a new record for the most goals scored in the competition, which currently stands at forty-five. This despite the fact they will play fewer matches due to the single-game knockout format.

Der FCB are also aiming to become the first-ever side to win every match in a UEFA Champions League campaign. Should they do so, it would also give them the most consecutive wins in competition history.

Bayern also have a better head-to-head between the two sides, winning four and losing only two of their eight previous meetings. They have also won each of the last three, including a 4-0 aggregate win when the sides met in the semi-finals back in 2009/10.

Lyon will hope their giant-slaying magic hasn’t worn off yet. They have already defeated Italian champions Juve and competition favourites, Man City to reach the semi-finals.

They also demonstrated against City that they could offer the sort of opponent Bayern may struggle with. A team capable of absorbing a lot of pressure, dealing with a high press, willing to play direct and with the pace to trouble the likes of Sule or Boateng.

While Bayern are huge favourites, they must also be wary of the threat Lyon pose if they are to reach the Champions League Final for the first time since 2013.

Lyon team news vs Bayern Munich

Following Lyon’s match against Manchester City, they have no fresh injury concerns in their squad.

Lucas Tousart and Martin Terrier haven’t travelled with the squad to Portugal. Lyon agreed with sales of the pair to Hertha Berlin and Rennes respectively.

Memphis Depay had another quiet game in attack. He has struggled to find his rhythm after returning to action very quickly following an ACL injury.

Lyon looked a much more dangerous side with the introduction of Moussa Dembele for the final fifteen minutes of the match. It was his brace that put les Gones into the semi-final. Will he be rewarded with Memphis’ starting spot in the attack?

Rudi Garcia is likely to trust the same players that have seen off Juventus and Man City. Few changes, if any, should be expected to the XI that started on Saturday evening.

Philippe Coutinho

Bayern Munich team news vs Lyon

Benjamin Pavard is the only injury concern for Bayern Munich before Wednesday’s match. He suffered a metatarsal ligament injury in training at the end of July. As a result, he has missed every Champions League match for the German Champions since the restart.

Philippe Coutinho had a fantastic fifteen-minute cameo against his parent club on Friday. He came off the bench to assist Bayern’s sixth goal before adding a seventh and eighth goal for himself.

The diminutive Brazilian will hope he did enough to earn a first start since the restart. Realistically though, it’s hard to see him displacing either Serge Gnabry or Thomas Müller. Ivan Perisic’s position looks most under threat, but the Croatian also gave a good account of himself against Barcelona.

Otherwise, Hans-Dieter Flick is likely to go with the same XI that dismantled the Catalans on Friday evening.
