Marseille vs Manchester City: Recommended bets
Over 2.5 goals. Each of Man City’s last five Champions League matches have produced three or more goals.
Both teams to score. Man City have only kept one clean sheet in four away matches this season, and also conceded in their opening Champions League match.
Raheem Sterling could lead City’s attack on Tuesday with Sergio Aguero an injury doubt. Sterling has scored four goals in his last five Man City appearances.
Marseille vs Manchester City: Match preview
Marseille host Manchester City at the Stade Velodrome on Tuesday night.
Man City were held to a disappointing 1-1 draw at West Ham on Saturday. Pep Guardiola’s side went behind in the first half and struggled to create enough chances against a resilient Hammers outfit.
Phil Foden came on as a half-time substitute and made an immediate impact with an equaliser, but the visitors failed to find the winning goal. The result leaves Man City 13th in the table on eight points, although they do have a game in hand over most of their rivals.
Last week, Man City won 3-1 against Porto in their opening group game. Porto opened the scoring but Man City equalised through a Sergio Aguero penalty. Second-half goals from Ilkay Gundogan and Ferran Torres secured the victory.
Marseille lost their opening group game away to Olympiakos. The game looked to be heading to a goalless draw before Koka scored in second-half stoppage time.
Andre Villas-Boas’ side responded with a 1-0 win away at Lorient on Saturday, moving them up to 4th in Ligue 1.
Tuesday’s match will be the first meeting between the two sides in European competition.
Marseille last faced English opposition in 2011, drawing 0-0 with Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.
Man City have a poor record against French opposition. They have won two, drawn three, and lost three of their eight matches against French sides. They were knocked out of the competition by Lyon last season at the quarter-final stage.
Marseille team news vs Manchester City
Dimitri Payet is currently serving a three-match domestic ban but that doesn’t affect his availability in Europe.
Despite scoring the winner on Saturday, Leonardo Balerdi could make way for Duje Caleta-Car at centre-back.
Bayern loanee Mickael Cuisance has featured regularly off the bench and is likely to do so again on Tuesday.
Manchester City team news vs Marseille
Less than a three after his return from a lengthy injury, Sergio Aguero has sustained another. This time it’s his hamstring, which forced him off at half-time against West Ham. Pep Guardiola did not specify the severity of the injury, but it’s highly likely that the Argentine will miss Tuesday’s game.
Gabriel Jesus remains sidelined with a hamstring injury, so Raheem Sterling or Riyad Mahrez could play in the false nine positions.
Guardiola also said that Kyle Walker was “exhausted” and suffering from fatigue, so we could well see Joao Cancelo start on the right against Marseille.
Phil Foden has not started City’s last two matches and could be recalled to the midfield.
Aymeric Laporte and Nathan Ake are both doubts, but at least one of the pair should be available.
Fernandinho remains unavailable.
Benjamin Mendy is in contention to face his former club.
