Manchester City vs Shakhtar Donetsk betting tips: Champions League match preview & predictions

Manchester City vs Shakhtar Donetsk prediction: Manchester City 3-1 Shakhtar Donetsk

Manchester City will be looking to extend their unbeaten run in all competitions to 12 matches on Wednesday night.

Group F is still relatively open heading into matchday four, but a win for the home side would put them in a very strong position with two matches remaining.

City have scored 15 goals in their last four matches at the Etihad, conceding just one in the process.

Manchester City vs Shakhtar Donetsk: Who will win?

Shakhtar have never won in England in seven previous attempts and that run is likely to continue on Wednesday.

City are 1/9 favourites to win on Wednesday while Shakhtar are a massive 25/1 to win. The draw can be backed at 10/1.

Given City’s recent goalscoring form, over 3.5 goals in the match looks relatively safe at 4/5.

Sergio Aguero has scored six goals in seven home matches this season. The Argentine is 11/5 to open the scoring and 4/11 to score anytime.

Manchester City vs Shakhtar Donetsk Champions League match preview

High-flying Manchester City host Ukranian side Shakhtar Donetsk at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday night. The match will be the third of four successive matches played at home for the current Premier League leaders.

Pep Guardiola’s side head into matchday four as Group F leaders with two wins and a loss from their opening three matches.

City were comfortable 3-0 winners against Shakhtar in last month’s reverse fixture. David Silva, Amyric Laporte and Bernardo Silva all scored in Ukraine.

The Citizens’ only defeat of the season so far came in their last home match in the competition when they were beaten 2-1 by Lyon in September.

Shakhtar are bottom of Group F on 2 points, but a shock win could propel them as high as 2nd.

Wednesday’s match will be considered a bonus fixture for Paulo Fonseca’s side, who will be eyeing points from their remaining group matches against Lyon and Hoffenheim.

Flying domestically

After beating Fulham 2-0 last week to secure a spot in the last eight of the Carabao Cup, City thrashed Southampton 6-1 on Sunday.

Raheem Sterling stole the show against the Saints, bagging two goals and two assists. There were goals as well for Aguero, David Silva and Leroy Sane.

City now have a two-point advantage over Chelsea and Liverpool at the top of the Premier League table.

Shakhtar maintained their fine domestic form on Saturday by beating Dynamo Kyiv 2-1 at home. Junior Moraes equalised for Shakhtar before Viktor Kovalenko scored a stoppage-time winner.

With 14 goals to his name this season, Moraes will be Shakhtar’s danger man on Monday night.

Manchester City team news vs Shakhtar Donetsk

Riyad Mahrez will almost certainly start having been an unused substitute against Southampton. His start will likely see Leroy Sane drop to the bench.

With matches coming thick and fast and Ilkay Gundogan and Kevin de Bruyne both out injured, David Silva may be rested in place of Phil Foden.

Sergio Aguero is expected to start up front but Gabriel Jesus provides an alternative for Guardiola.

Captain Vincent Kompany should start in place of John Stones while Fabien Delph could be given the nod ahead of Benjamin Mendy at left-back.

Shakhtar Donetsk team news vs Manchester City

Fonseca will be hoping to have Taras Stepanenko available but Brazilian duo Fernando and Marlos are both expected to miss out.

Wednesday’s game comes too soon for Taison while Ivan Ordets and Maksim Malyshev also sidelined through injury.

Bogdan Butko could start at right-back while Wellington Nem should feature on the right of a front three.
