Will Manchester City book their place in the round of 16, thereby securing top spot as well?

So far in this Champions League campaign, Pep Guardiola’s side have won three of their four fixtures, scoring 15 goals and conceding seven.

This includes back-to-back victories over Club Brugge, 5-1 in Belgium and then 4-1 at home.

Before this, the Citizens had seen off RB Leipzig 6-3 but this was followed by the one blot on their copybook, a 2-0 loss in Paris.

Nevertheless, Manchester City are currently top of Group A, five points clear of Club Brugge in third, and a win here would wrap up first place.

This would make it the ninth successive season they’ve reached the knockout phase, dating back to 2012 when they finished bottom of their group.

At the weekend, the Sky Blues’ imperious form continued, swatting aside Everton 3-0 at the Etihad.

It took until first half stoppage time to break the deadlock but it was certainly worth the wait.

João Cancelo’s outrageous outside of the foot ball perfectly found Raheem Sterling who fired home the opener.

In the second half, a Rodri rocket doubled their lead before Bernardo Silva secured the victory late on.

This means Man City have taken 26 points from the last 33 available in the Premier League, only losing to Crystal Palace in that time.

They’re back up to second, one point above Liverpool but still three adrift league-leaders Chelsea.

Will they beat Paris Saint-Germain this time and secure first place in Group A?

Will PSG beat Man City again?

As for PSG, it’s been an up and down season so far.

Without doubt, their most impressive victory to date came when Manchester City visited Parc des Princes in September.

Idrissa Gana Gueye opened the scoring after just eight minutes before Lionel Messi combined with Kylian Mbappé before curling home his first for the club.

In all, les Parisiens have eight points on the board in the Champions League, winning both home games and drawing twice on the road.

Last time out, it finished 2-2 at Red Bull Arena in a very eventual encounter against RB Leipzig.

Gianluigi Donnarumma saved a penalty, preventing Leipzig from going 2-0 in front, before a quick-fire Georginio Wijnaldum brace had PSG ahead.

Nevertheless, the Bundesliga side did convert their second spot-kick of the night, doing so in the 92nd minute, as it finished 2-2.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side are not in any danger serious of missing out on the last 16, given that they host challengers Club Brugge on the final matchday.

But, les Rouge-et-Bleu’s performances are not inspiring confidence that they’re going to be lifting the trophy in Saint Petersburg in May.

Over in Ligue 1, despite inexplicably not winning the title last season, they’re already 11 points clear at the top.

On Saturday, Mbappé and Messi got the goals in a 3-1 victory over Nantes at home.

This means Paris Saint-Germain have won three in-a-row in Ligue 1, taking 37 points from a possible 42, only losing to Stade Rennais so far.

But, in 19 matches in all competitions this season, PSG have kept just five clean sheets.

Only Man City, Stade de Reims, Clermont Foot, Montpellier and Olympique Marseille have failed to score against them and Le Classique was a goalless draw.

That is a concern ahead of the knockout stages so Pochettino will be looking for a statement victory here to alleviate some of those concerns.

Will Paris Saint-Germain win at the Etihad, thereby recapturing top spot in the group?

Pep Guardiola, of course, has a plethora of options so, as always, will rotate in some areas of the pitch.

Ederson though will continue in goal, looking to add to his seven clean sheets from just 15 appearances this season.

At the back, Rúben Dias was given a rare rest on Sunday but is expected to return, alongside Aymeric Laporte with John Stones making way.

One area that hasn’t seen much tinkering this season though is full-back with Kyle Walker on the right and João Cancelo on the other side.

Oleksandr Zinchenko, who’d played a lot of football at left-back in recent seasons, has started just twice so far this campaign.

In midfield, Rodri is becoming a fixtures at the base, and it now scoring screamers too.

Further forward, Kevin De Bruyne is unavailable after testing positive for Covid-19 when he returned from international duty.

So, İlkay Gündoğan and player of the season so far Bernardo Silva will continue in those “free eight” roles.

In attack, Jack Grealish is a doubt and Ferran Torres is a long-term injury issue.

So, Phil Foden will continue to operate from the left but Riyāḍ Maḥrez could come in for Raheem Sterling wide-right.

Through the middle, teenager Cole Palmer got his first Premier League start at the weekend.

However, he’s likely to be back on the bench for this one with Gabriel Jesus returning.

Palmer will be sat alongside another future star, James McAtee, who made his senior debut against Everton.

Will Manchester City be too strong for PSG?

As for the Ligue 1 leaders, they travel to Manchester with all their galácticos fit and ready to go.

Whether or not Mauricio Pochettino can build a cohesive system to accommodate them all is another question.

In goal, Keylor Navas and Gianluigi Donnarumma have been sharing the responsibilities.

The Euro 2020’s Player of the Tournament has started just seven times since joining PSG but is likely return for this huge fixture.

At the back, Presnel Kimpembe and Marquinhos were both rested against Nantes, after busy international windows, but will return.

Sergio Ramos is still awaiting his PSG debut due to injury; he’s played just seven times for anyone (Real Madrid and Spain) in 2021.

At full-back, fellow summer recruits Achraf Hakimi and Nuno Mendes, who are both very attacking, will have to be particularly disciplined here.

Discipline is the name of the game when it comes to Pochettino picking a midfield three.

Danilo Pereira, who was only on the bench on Saturday, could return to the XI, alongside Idrissa Gana Gueye with Marco Verratti more advanced.

This would see Leandro Paredes drop to the bench where he’ll find Ander Herrera and Georginio Wijnaldum, both of whom have enjoyed big wins at the Etihad before.

Wijnaldum has struggled to establish himself in Paris, with his brace in Leipzig coming in the absence of one of the front three.

In short, in appear hard to fit the Dutchman into a side that also contains the trio of superstars up top.

Lionel Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappé have scored 1,285 career goals between them; not bad.

Messi also scored his first in Ligue 1 against Nantes so is just 473 behind his La Liga record; scoring at his current rate, he’ll get to that figure in 2096.

Ángel Di María and Mauro Icardi will, once again, be left in reserve.

PSG, out of possession, pretty much have seven outfielders defending and three icons of the game standing, watching and waiting for the ball.

Will that take PSG to their first ever Champions League title?

Well, based on current evidence no but this trip to Manchester City could help to disprove this hypothesis.

Can Paris Saint-Germain beat the Premier League champions again?
