Manchester City vs Lyon betting tips: Champions League match preview & predictions

Manchester City vs Lyon prediction: Man City 3-0 Lyon

No side has scored more than Manchester City’s 14 goals in the Premier League so far this season and Pep Guardiola’s side will be expected to carry that goalscoring form into Europe.

Lyon have kept one clean sheet in their last four, failing to score themselves in two of those matches.

Man City vs Lyon: Who will win?

City are massive 2/11 favourites to win the match while Lyon are 16/1 outsiders. The draw can be backed at 15/2.

For more favourable odds, City are 11/10 to win with a -2 handicap.

Gabriel Jesus is 13/5 to open the scoring and 4/9 to score anytime in the 90.

The Premier League champions extended their unbeaten start to the campaign with a 3-0 home win over Fulham on Saturday.

City are third in the table following four wins and a draw.

Lyon were held to a 2-2 draw at Caen on Saturday. Nabil Fekir opened the scoring for Bruno Genesio’s side before Caen scored two. Ferland Mendy scored a late equaliser to rescue a point against the home side, who had two players sent off.

Lyon have made an average start to the campaign and lie 7th in the Ligue 1 standings after two wins, two defeats and a draw in their opening five games.

Manchester City: Group favourites

Last month’s draw was relatively kind to Manchester City, who were placed in Group F alongside Olympique Lyonnais, Shakhtar Donetsk and Hoffenheim.

Man City won five of their six matches in last season’s group stage, en route to the quarter-finals. Guardiola’s side scored 14 goals in the group phase.

City are comfortable favourites to finish top of the group once again.

Lyon and Man City have never faced each other in their history.

Lyon are back in UEFA’s premier competition following a one-season break. The French side reached the semi-final of the competition in the 2009-10 season.

Lyon will be looking to reach the knockout stage for the first time since 2011. By contrast, City have done so in each of the last five seasons.

Man City team news vs Lyon

Gabriel Jesus could start after Sergio Aguero’s injury on Saturday. The Argentine’s injury isn’t a serious one but may prevent him from playing the full 90.

Fabian Delph is expected to start at left-back after Benjamin Mendy injured his knee last week. Olexandr Zinchenko provides an alternative, but Brazilian full-back Danilo is a doubt.

Amyric Laporte can also play at left-back but should continue centrally, with Nicolas Otamendi, Vincent Kompany and John Stones competing for the other centre-back spot.

Kevin de Bruyne is stepping up his recovery from a long-term knee injury, but it will still be weeks before the Belgian is ready to play.

Eliaquim Mangala and Claudio Bravo are long-term absentees.

Lyon team news vs Man City

Former Manchester City defender Jason Denayer is set to face his old club. After a number of loan spells away from Manchester, the Belgian signed for Lyon from Man City this summer.

City fans are likely to give a hostile reception to two former Manchester United players, Memphis Depay and Rafael da Silva. Depay was rested on Saturday with Wednesday’s game in mind.

Amine Gouiri is sidelined while Fernando Marcal is a doubt.

Moussa Dembele scored twice against Man City for Celtic last season but is likely to start on the bench.
