Match preview

Liverpool are in need of a win and a convincing performance after a heavy defeat to Napoli saw them open up their Champions League tilt with a 4-0 defeat in Italy, and make it two defeats already this season to go with three draws.

If this run of form continues much longer, the murmurings around Jurgen Klopp’s ability to regenerate a side may grow louder with the Reds currently struggling to replace Sadio Mane’s influence (in spite of Luis Diaz’s fine start), and the midfield looking short of options.

Darwin Nunez’s return should help them get up to speed quickly, but they come up against an Ajax side who have already coasted past Rangers in the Champions League and have been a successful and tricky opponent in Europe for several sides in the last few years.

Unfortunate circumstances forced Liverpool’s weekend Premier League game to be postponed but that break could help Klopp’s side in priming themselves for what is essentially a must-win encounter.

Andy Robertson has been one of the many players to struggle with form so far this season and he will definitely miss the tie after being ruled out until October, joining Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Curtis Jones on the sidelines.

Ajax have responded well to the loss of Erik ten Hag in the summer, winning all seven games in all competitions so far this season and will pose a significant threat to Liverpool.

Steven Bergwijn has hit the ground running after his summer arrival from Spurs, notching eight goals in as many games so far and will be looking to take advantage of the weaknesses at the back for the Reds, with Trent Alexander-Arnold likely to be tested going back.
