Krasnodar vs Chelsea: Match preview
Krasnodar host 2012 Champions League winners Chelsea at the Krasnodar Stadium on Wednesday night.
Krasnodar picked up a point in their opening group game last week following a 1-1 draw away at Rennes. Krasnodar went behind after conceding a penalty but were back on level terms less than three minutes later thanks to an equaliser from Cristian Ramirez.
Chelsea were held to a 0-0 draw at home to Sevilla in their opening match, leaving all four teams in Group E on 1 point.
Man United 0 – Chelsea 0
The Blues showed some good moments on Saturday, picking up a point and a clean sheet at Old Trafford. Chelsea probably should’ve had a penalty as well.
The result leaves the Blues in 9th place on 9 points from six matches played. Not the greatest start they’ve ever had but it’s still early days.
Krasnodar, meanwhile, suffered a 3-1 home defeat to Spartak Moscow on Saturday which leaves them 8th in the Russian Premier League after 12 games.
Krasnodar failed to progress past the group stage of the Europa League last season, finishing 3rd in a group with Basel, Getafe and Trabzonspor.
Chelsea were knocked out of the Champions League at the round of 16 stage, losing 7-1 on aggregate to eventual winners Bayern Munich.
Krasnodar vs Chelsea is a new experience
Wednesday’s match will be the first meeting between the two sides.
Krasnodar have only faced English opposition twice in their 12-year history. Both matches came against Everton in the group stage of the Europa League in 2014. Krasnodar drew 1-1 at home with the Toffees before picking up a 1-0 win at Goodison Park.
Chelsea have a solid record against Russian opposition, winning five out of six matches. The Blues did however lose the 2008 Champions League Final on Russian soil, losing in a penalty shootout against Manchester United.
Krasnodar team news vs Chelsea
Krasnodar have a fairly lengthy absentee list.
Former France international Remy Cabella remains doubtful after testing positive for COVID-19 earlier in the month. Cabella is Krasnodar’s leading scorer in all competitions so far this season and would be a huge miss if he’s unavailable.
Yevgeni Markov, recently signed from Dynamo Moscow, also tested positive recently and is expected to miss out.
Arsenal academy graduate Kristoffer Olsson is likely to start in midfield.
Marcus Berg is set to lead Krasnodar’s attack. Berg has won 80 caps for Sweden, scoring 22 international goals.
Ruslan Kambolov, Viktor Claesson, Wanderson, Ari, Sergey Petrov, Aleksandr Chernikov, and Dmitri Stotskiy are all either injured or doubtful.
New signing Aleksey Ionov has not been included in Krasnodar’s Champions League squad for the group stages.
Chelsea team news vs Krasnodar
With matches coming thick and fast, Frank Lampard may opt to rotate his side – and he certainly has the squad to do so.
Kepa Arrizabalaga remains doubtful with a shoulder injury, so Edouard Mendy will keep his place in goal. Petr Cech was not included in Chelsea’s European squad and won’t be on the bench.
Reece James was very impressive at Old Trafford and could keep his place at right-back, while Mason Mount could be handed a recall in midfield.
Hakim Ziyech is still building up match fitness following an injury and is in line to earn his first start for the club.
36-year-old Thiago Silva may need a rest, which would see one of Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen or Fikayo Tomori come into the side.
Mateo Kovacic, Tammy Abraham, Callum Hudson-Odoi, Emerson Palmieri, and Olivier Giroud are all further options for Lampard.
Marcos Alonso is suspended for the match.
Billy Gilmour is a long-term absentee.
