Juventus vs Chelsea: Match preview

Will this finally be the year that Juventus end their oh so long wait to be European Champions?

Well, based on their performances so far, the answer is emphatically no.

Despite having won 36 Scudettos, at least 17 more than anyone else, Juve’s only European triumphs came in 1985 and then 1996.

Since the latter, they’ve lost in no less than five Champions League finals, falling at the last in 1997, 1998, 2003, 2015 and 2o17.

This is why Cristiano Ronaldo was brought to Turin but, in his three years at the club, they went backwards.

A quarter-final defeat to Ajax was followed by back-to-back loses to Olympique Lyonnais and then FC Porto in the round of 16.

Of course, Ronaldo has now gone but, so far, he has not left a brave new world behind him.

La Vecchia Signora failed to win any of their first four Serie A games for the first time since 1961.

A draw with Udinese was followed by back-to-back loses to newly-promoted Empoli and Napoli before another draw, this with A.C. Milan.

In the last week though, Massimiliano Allegri’s side have climbed up the table, beating Spezia and then Sampdoria, both 3-2.

Paulo Dybala and Manuel Locatelli scoring with Leonardo Bonucci converting a penalty in the latter.

This leaves I Bianconeri ninth in Serie A.

In the Champions League meanwhile they currently lead the way in Group H, all be it after one matchday.

A fortnight ago, they weathered an early storm and beat Malmö 3-0 in Sweden; Alex Sandro, Dybala and Álvaro Morata on target.

Juventus are very likely to advance to the knockout phase for the eighth straight season but that has to just be the start.

As mentioned, they’ve already lost to Napoli and drawn with Milan so this is another litmus test as to where Juve are.

Will the Italian giants beat the reigning European Champions at Allianz Stadium?

Will Chelsea win in Turin?

As for Chelsea, everything was going well for them, until the weekend.

On matchday one of this competition, the Blues beat Zenit Saint Petersburg 1-0 at home with Romelu Lukaku the man on target.

Before this, Thomas Tuchel’s side won the UEFA Super Cup, adding to their Champions League success of May.

In the Premier League, they began by amassing 13 points from a possible 15, only drawing 1-1 with Liverpool at Anfield.

But then, on Saturday, the first bump in the road as Manchester City won 1-0 at Stamford Bridge in a heavyweight bout.

In that game, Tuchel started all three of Jorginho, N’Golo Kanté and Mateo Kovačić strewn across midfield in front of a back five.

This left Lukaku and Timo Werner extremely isolated and, despite being behind for over 40 minutes, Chelsea rarely threatened at all.

Pretty much everything has gone right for Tuchel since taking over in mid-January but that was the first time he’d got it tactically wrong.

So, Chelsea fans will want to see a response from their team and their Head Coach in this glamour fixture.

Like Juve, they’re surely set for the round of 16 with Zenit and Malmö unlikely to have enough to threaten the top two positions.

The London club have actually finish in the top two of 18 of the 19 UEFA groups they’ve ever entered.

The one exception was in 2012/13 when, as defending European Champions, they finished third in a group featuring Juventus.

As mentioned though, déjà vu does not seem likely.

That season, Chelsea left Turin have been dumped out of the competition, getting hammered 3-0, so will they enjoy a better night at Allianz Stadium?

The squad at Massimiliano Allegri’s disposal is nowhere near as strong as the one he left just two years ago.

Although, it does feature some familiar faces throughout.

In goal, after numerous high-profile errors, Wojciech Szczęsny was dropped against Sampdoria on Sunday.

It’ll be fascinating to see if Mattia Perin keeps the gloves for this one.

In defence, Matthijs de Ligt could keep his place with Giorgio Chiellini returning in place of Leonardo Bonucci.

Alex Sandro and Juan Cuadrado could also keep their places, ostensibly as full-backs, with the more defensive duo of Danilo and Mattia De Sciglio missing out.

Cuadrado made just 15 appearances for Chelsea but picked up a League Cup and Premier League winners’ medal.

In this 4-4-2 shape, Euro 2020 star Manuel Locatelli and Rodrigo Bentancur are the first-choice midfield duo.

That’s with Arthur and Adrien Rabiot injured and Aaron Ramsey and Weston McKennie out of favour.

Federico Bernardeschi and Federico Chiesa will start out-wide but in attack, they’re really short of options.

That’s because both Paulo Dybala and Álvaro Morata went off injured against Sampdoria and Allegri confirmed neither will feature here.

So, Dejan Kuluševski, a winger by trade, and Moise Kean will lead the line.

Kean has returned to the club after scoring just four times in 39 games for Everton but did net 17 times on loan at PSG last season.

His last act in English football was getting sent off at Huddersfield Town in a Carabao Cup tie last month.

Will the 21 year old show his qualities here with a goal in a Juve win?

Chelsea meanwhile have injury issues of their own.

Although, Édouard Mendy did return in goal at the weekend so will surely start again with Kepa Arrizabalaga back on the bench.

At the back, Reece James went off injured on Sunday so isn’t likely to be involved anytime soon.

But, Thiago Silva, who came on for him in that game, could return alongside Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rüdiger.

César Azpilicueta will shift over to right-wing-back with Marcos Alonso continuing on the other side.

Ben Chilwell’s only appearances this season came in a seven minutes cameo against Zenit and then the full 90 against Aston Villa in the League Cup, in which he missed in the shootout.

In the middle, after the dower, defensive display against Manchester City, surely Thomas Tuchel won’t deploy all three defensive midfielders again any time soon.

Italian Euro 2020 hero Jorginho is likely to keep his place with N’Golo Kanté alongside.

So, Mateo Kovačić could return to the bench alongside Saúl Ñíguez who’s only played twice for his new club, both against Villa.

In attack, they’re currently without Mason Mount and Christian Pulisic, meaning both U.S. stars who could be on show aren’t likely to feature.

Last season’s Champions League Final hero Kai Havertz could come into the XI, joining compatriot Timo Werner and Romelu Lukaku in attack.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Hakim Ziyech will be the attacking options off the bench, as they were on Saturday.

Will the European Champions make it six points out of six in this season’s competition?
