Match: Glasgow Rangers vs Standard Liege
Competition: UEFA Europa League
Date: December 3, 2020
Kick-off time: 8:00 pm, December 3, 2020 (UK time)
Betting prediction: Glasgow Rangers 3 – 0 Standard Liège
The Gers welcome Standard Liège to Ibrox Stadium in Glasgow on Thursday for this UEFA Europa League match.
Rangers won 0-2 in Liège when these two sides met back in October. They also won 2-0 at Ibrox on the only previous occasion Standard Liège have faced the Gers in Scotland.
That match in Glasgow against Standard Liège back in 1962 was the 2nd of 3 matches in which Rangers have hosted Belgian opponents. The other two also resulted in home wins. They defeated Anderlecht 5-2 here in 1959. They also defeated Club Brugge 2-1 in 1993.
Standard Liège are no strangers to Scottish football. They have travelled north to face Scottish opponents on no less than 6 previous occasions. Yet, somewhat surprisingly, have not met the green-half of Glasgow in competitive action.
The Reds 0-1 win against Hearts in the 1992 UEFA Cup remains their only win on Scottish soil. They have suffered defeat here on 4 occasions to Aberdeen, Dundee United, Rangers and Hearts. They also drew 0-0 with Dundee United back in the late 1970s.
Glasgow Rangers vs Standard Liege: What are the betting odds?
Rangers have been ruthless at home in the Scottish Premiership this season. They have won 8 matches from 8, scoring 28 goals and conceding 0. They start the match as the huge 2/5 on favourites to beat Standard Liège again on Thursday.
Standard Liège have won on just 1 of their 6 previous visits to Scotland. They have also lost both away matches so far in Group D. This sees them start the match as 11/2 underdogs on Thursday to beat Rangers at Ibrox.
Rangers drew their last home match in Group D against Benfica. Odds of 4/1 are available if you see them being held to a point by Standard Liège on Thursday.

Glasgow Rangers vs Standard Liege: Match preview
There were many doubting Gerrard’s credentials as a manager when he was hired to break Celtic’s stranglehold on the Scottish Premiership; currently standing at 9 consecutive league titles.
Those voices are rather quiet today though, as Gerrard’s Rangers have dominated the Scottish Premiership this season. Beating Celtic, at Celtic Park, in the first Old Firm derby (pictured above) of the season was a clear message of intent to the green half of Glasgow. They currently sit top of the league, unbeaten, having dropped only 4 points this season.
Rangers also thrashed Falkirk in their only Scottish League Cup match and sit top of their group with a nice 5-point buffer between themselves and Lech Poznań in 3rd.
That doesn’t mean Gerrard is without problems to solve with his side. For one, he will be concerned at how his side threw away a 2-goal lead against Benfica in Lisbon in the final 15 minutes of the match. They then repeated the feat here last Thursday having got themselves 2-0 ahead.
Of course, Benfica are a good side with plenty of European experience. They are much stronger than most of the sides Scottish football has to throw at Rangers each week.
The fact that Rangers are 23 competitive matches into this season and remain undefeated, despite facing the likes of Benfica twice and Celtic away just underlines the impressive job Gerrard has done with this squad.
Their opponents, Standard Liège are a decent side but should be no match for Rangers. They are struggling to win matches in the league, with just 6 wins from 14 matches. Their 3 points from a possible 12 in this group is a reflection of their strength relative to Rangers and Benfica.
Glasgow Rangers team news vs Standard Liege
Nikola Katic has been ruled out for the season due to a cruciate ligament rupture. Connor Goldson and Leon Balogun have become Gerrard’s first-choice centre back pairing in his absence.
Joe Aribo has been struggling this season with an ankle injury, which has already caused him to miss half of Rangers games this season. He has started Rangers’ last 4 league matches but is ruled out on Thursday with a knock.
Jermain Defoe missed the start of this campaign due to a hamstring injury. He has been battling back to fitness in November and could make his first appearance in the Europa League on Thursday.
George Edmundson and Jordan Jones haven’t been involved in Rangers’ recent squads due to Coronavirus quarantine. However, both are available for selection once again.
Standard Liege team news vs Glasgow Rangers
Zinho Vanheusden suffered a cruciate ligament rupture at the beginning of the month. The 21-year has been ruled out for the rest of the season. Noë Dussenne has replaced him as in central defence for the Reds.
William Balikwisha is yet to feature for Standard Liège this season due to a shoulder injury. However, he is nearing a return to action and has an outside chance of making the bench here.
Eden Shamir is currently serving a 2-match ban in the Jupiler Pro League. He received a straight red card against KAS Eupen for violent conduct. However, the ban does not apply to European competition and he is expected to return to their midfield on Thursday.
