Crvena Zvezda vs Liverpool betting tips: Champions League preview & predictions

Crvena Zvezda vs Liverpool prediction: Crvena Zvezda 0-2 Liverpool

Crvena Zvezda, known as Red Star Belgrade to English football fans, are the dominant force of Serbian football right now.

Their last defeat in the league was a year and a half ago, on May 6th, 2017. Since they have had an undefeated run of fifty five games spanning across three seasons.

They have also won their last twelve games here at the Rajko Mitić stadium.

Their opponent here, Liverpool, are also unbeaten in the league this season. However, they have won just 3 times in their last 8 games in all competitions. A run that includes just 1 win in 4 away from home.

Crvena Zvezda vs Liverpool: Who will win?

Having hammered Red Star at Anfield two weeks ago, Liverpool are comfortable favourites coming into the tie, priced at 1/6.

Red Star have failed to win any of their last 7 matches in UEFA Champions League. They are priced at 12/1 to break that streak tonight.

With 5 of their last 11 ties ending in a draw, the 13/2 odds for a draw here look a very good price.

European nights here are usually low scoring affairs. Qualifiers aside, there has been just 4 goals scored here in total from the last 5 European ties. None of the games had over 2.5 goals which is reflected in the 8/15 odds of there being over 2.5 goals here.

Red Star Belgrade scored in half their group games last season and also against PSG already this term. With 40 goals already in their domestic league this season, they will be confident of scoring against Liverpool. The odds of both teams scoring are 6/5.

Crvena Zvezda vs Liverpool: Who will score?

Marko Marin scored Red Star’s first ever goal in the European Cup in its new Champions League format. He is 7/1 to get on the scoresheet, 22/1 to do so as the first scorer.

Milan Pavkov has two goals from three starts since the match at Anfield. Odds of 16/1 are available for him as first scorer to score at any time.

Firmino has the winning goal for Liverpool in two out of their three group games already this season. He opened the scoring against Red Star at Anfield and is 4/1 to so again here. 1/1 to score at any time.

Salah bagged a brace at Anfield and has looked in good scoring form as of late. He is 1/2 to score at any time and 9/4 to open the scoring.

Mané is the clubs joint-top scorer in all competitions this season with seven goals already. He scored the 4th goal at Anfield but can he score first here? He is 9/4 to do so, or 11/10 at any time.

Crvena Zvezda vs Liverpool: Match preview

Despite being the dominant side domestically, in European competition Red Star tend to approach matches very differently. They opt for more of a low-block aiming to only engage their opponents in their own half. They allow sides to have time on the ball in lieu of restricting their spaces in good attacking positions.

In their game here against Napoli, they allowed them to dominate the ball (73.3% possession). However, by restricting space in and around their box, they forced Napoli to mostly shoot from distance.

Of the 20 shots Napoli had on the night, 11 were from outside the box and none were from inside the six yard box. As a result, only 8 of their shots were on target to trouble the keeper. Only 4 of those were from inside the penalty area and only two of those were considered “big chances”.

At Anfield though, they failed to restrict Liverpool in the same manner. While Liverpool had a similar number of shots to Napoli (21), they managed to fashion 13 scoring chances inside the penalty area. A whopping 9 of those were considered big chances’.

If Red Star can shut down the prime real estate restricting Liverpool to mostly pot shots, they will feel they can get something from the game. However, if the Reds are in a similar mood to 2 weeks ago at Anfield, they may struggle to contain then.

Crucial to this will be Liverpool’s ability to create chances centrally with through balls or combination play in tight spaces. They were very effective at doing so at Anfield, particularly Shaqiri, Firmino, Fabinho then later Sturridge off the bench.

Richmond Boakye hasn’t featured for Red Star since the game at Anfield. Milan Pavkov has been leading the line in his absence. With two goals from the three starts, he will feel he has done enough to keep his place.

Marko Marin was back in the starting line-up at the weekend. He remains the only Red Star player to have scored for them in this seasons Champions League Group stages. Slavoljub Srnic is expected to give way for him on the left side of their attack.

First choice goalkeeper, Milan Borjan, missed the last league game for them. Many feel he was crucial in keeping the score down for them at Anfield. He was also their man of the match in the 0-0 draw against Napoli making eight saves. Zoran Popovic will come in for him if he is unavailable.

There will be a temptation for Liverpool to keep the same side that saw Red Star off 4-0 at Anfield.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain remains Liverpool’s only long-term injury worry with a knee ligament injury.

Naby Keita, Jordan Henderson and Dejan Lovren will also struggle to make this game due to muscle injuries. The trio are expected back shortly though.

Liverpool’s goal scorer from the weekend, James Milner, looks likely to miss the game with a broken nose picked up at the weekend.

Xherdan Shaqiri has not travelled due to political tensions, which is a decision that has already attracted plenty of controversy.

Shaqiri celebrated a goal for Switzerland against Serbia at the World Cup with a political gesture – the ‘double eagle’ symbolising the Albanian flag (above).

Klopp must feel this game will be one for calm, focused heads and looks set to opt with Lallana instead.
