Betting prediction: Chelsea 3 – 1 Rennes

The Pensioners welcome Rennes to Stamford Bridge in London on Wednesday for this UEFA Champions League match.

This will be the first competitive match between the two sides in history. However, it isn’t the first time Chelsea have faced French opposition at Stamford Bridge. They have a mixed record here, with 7 wins, 5 draws and 5 defeats from 16 matches against Ligue 1 sides.

Their most recent visit from France was that of Lille in last season’s group stage of this competition. The Blues won 2-1 here; the same score they defeated Lille by in France 2 months prior.

It also isn’t Rennes’ first visit to London. They lost 3-0 here to Arsenal in the last-16 of the Europa League back in 2019. The Gunners eventually losing the final that season to none other than Chelsea.

Rennes had one match prior to this on English soil. They visited Birmingham to face Aston Villa in the Semi-Final stage of the now-defunct UEFA Intertoto Cup back in 2001. Their 1-0 defeat in this match saw them eliminated on away goals after winning the first leg 2-1 in Rennes.

Chelsea vs Rennes: What are the betting odds?

The Blues’ 2-1 win over Lille here back in 2019 was their last home win in European competition. Since then, they have lost 0-3 to Bayern and drawn with Sevilla here. Despite this, they are the heavy favourites at 4/11 on to win here on Wednesday.

Chelsea have drawn each of their last 2 home matches against Sevilla and Southampton. Odds of 4/1 are available if you see Rennes holding them to another draw on Wednesday.

Rennes are yet to win a Champions League match. With this being their first season in UEFA’s flagship competition, their score draw at home to Krasnodar and a 1-0 defeat in Sevilla are their only results in this competition. Odds of 15/2 suggest few expect them to pick up their first win, here at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea vs Rennes: Recommended bets

Chelsea’s last home victory over French opposition came back in December 2019 by a 2-1 scoreline. A repeat of this score on Wednesday is available at odds of 15/2.

Rennes have never won on English soil, nor in this competition. Their last away win was back in September in Ligue 1 against AS Saint-Étienne. You can back them at 80/1 for the same 0-3 scoreline here on Wednesday.

Three of the four matches involving these sides in Group E have seen under 2.5 goals scored. You can back another low scoring game here on Wednesday with odds of 6/5 for under 2.5 goals.

Timo Werner is showing signs that he is settling into life at Chelsea very quickly, with 4 goals and 2 assists in his last 5 appearances for the club. He scored in Chelsea’s 0-4 win in Krasnodar last week and followed that up with his first Premier League goal at the weekend against Burnley. The German international is the favourite to get on the scoresheet at 4/5. You can back Timo at 3/1 to grab the game’s opening goal.

Serhou Guirassy became the first Rennes player to score in the Champions League when he scored the opening goal from the penalty spot in their 1-1 draw with Krasnodar back in October. The 24-year-old forward 11/1 to score the opener against Chelsea. Or 10/3 to score at any time against the Blues.

Chelsea vs Rennes: Match preview

The Blues finally meet in Europe with the team they look at to solve their goalkeeping needs.

In 2018, Chelsea set a new club record in signing Kepa Arrizabalaga from Athletic Bilbao in Spain. The £70m fee is still the world-record fee for a goalkeeper in club football, beating the £56m Liverpool paid for Alisson earlier that summer.

However, after 2 difficult years at Chelsea where he ranked bottom of most advanced shot-stopping metrics from Statsbomb and others, Chelsea moved to replace him this summer.

Edouard Mendy (pictured above) arrived from Stade Rennais in a £22m deal, rising to £27m if certain conditions are met, to solve the goalkeeping problems at the club. Many pundits had stated failing to do so would hinder them for challenging for the Premier League and Champions League trophies.

However, it isn’t the first time Chelsea have looked to the Northern French city to solve their goalkeeping issues. Back in 2004, Jose Mourinho signed Petr Cech from Rennes in an £11.7m deal. At the time, the talk was of the fee Chelsea paid. This ended when Cech started shattering records for his performances between the sticks for the Blues. To this day, he still holds the record for the most clean sheets and fewest goals conceded in a Premier League season. As well as the most clean sheets in Premier League history.

This season, Rennes have replaced Mendy with Romain Salin and Alfred Gomis. However, since Mendy’s departure, they are yet to keep a clean sheet and both are currently underperforming ‘expected saves’ (or xS) so far this season. This is essentially a measure of how many shots they should be expected to save based on certain variables.

While Kepa ranked last out of all Premier League goalkeepers in xS last season, saving 9.5 shots fewer than expected, Mendy has ranked highly in each of the last two seasons in France. He saved 4.6 shots more than expected in 2018/19 and 1.7 more in 2019/20.

He is already outperforming this metric at Chelsea, where he is yet to concede in 3 Premier League appearances.

Rennes won’t be keen to see this familiar face on Wednesday, as it’s likely in this form he will be the difference between 1 point and 3 for Chelsea.

Chelsea team news vs Rennes

Billy Gilmour is Chelsea’s only long-term injury concern coming into this match.

“He’s probably 3-4 weeks away from his return. We are probably looking at the other side of the next international break.”
– Frank Lampard, Chelsea Manager

Christian Pulisic felt something in his hamstring in the warm-up against Burnley. He will have a scan to ascertain the exact problem but it is unlikely that he will be risked here.

Kepa Arrizabalaga hasn’t been included in a Chelsea squad since the 3-3 draw with Southampton on the 17th of October. Lampard confirmed before the trip to Burnley that he was progressing with his shoulder injury. If he isn’t able to make it back in time to be on the bench here, Willy Caballero will continue as Chelsea’s backup keeper.

Antonio Rüdiger, César Azpilicueta, Mateo Kovacic (pictured above) and Callum Hudson-Odoi are the players most likely to benefit from any rotation to the Chelsea XI here.

Rennes team news vs Chelsea

Stade Rennais could be without their most valuable player for the trip to London. Eduardo Camavinga missed the 2-1 win against Stade Brest at the weekend with a knock, and it could also prevent him from taking part in Wednesday evening’s match.

James Léa Siliki returned from a groin injury to make his first appearance of the season last weekend. If Camavinga is out for this match, Siliki will likely retain his spot in midfield in place of the 17-year-old French international.

Daniele Rugani, who is on a season-long loan from Juventus, is also expected to miss the game due to thigh problems. Like Camavinga, he missed the weekend’s match against Brest due to this injury.

Faitout Maouassa is on the long-term injury list due to ankle surgery. Their first choice left-back likely won’t feature again for the club until Christmas, effectively ruling him out of all their remaining matches in the Group stages of this competition.

Flavien Tait was not included in their squad at the weekend due to illness. The 27-year-old left winger is expected to be available for the trip to London though.

M’Baye Niang hasn’t played for the club since their 1-1 draw at Lille on the opening day of the 2020/21 Ligue 1 season. He is regaining his fitness though but isn’t expected to feature against Chelsea.
