Chelsea vs Bayern Munich prediction: Chelsea 1-1 Bayern Munich

Chelsea picked up a confidence-boosting win at the weekend but that was just their second victory in their last six matches in all competitions.

The Blues have only won two of their last eight home matches in the Champions League.

Bayern are in great form coming into this one, having won 10 of their last 11 matches. They have, however, shown some defensive frailties in recent weeks which will give Chelsea a chance.

Chelsea vs Bayern Munich: Who will win?

Bayern Munich are the only team to have won all six Champions League matches this season. which is why it’s no surprise they are the bookies’ favourites at 3/4.

Chelsea are 31/10 to win the match while the draw is priced at 3/1.

There have been three or more goals scored in six of Bayern Munich’s last seven matches – and in four of Chelsea’s last five. Bet on over 2.5 goals at 4/7.

Serge Gnabry scored his 15th goal of the season on Friday night and his fourth of the calendar year. The former Arsenal man also scored four against Spurs in Bayern’s most recent visit to London. Gnabry is 11/2 to open the scoring and 6/4 to score anytime.

Chelsea vs Bayern Munich Champions League match preview

Chelsea host Bayern Munich at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night for the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie.

Chelsea’s top-four hopes were given a major boost on Saturday as they beat rivals Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 at Stamford Bridge. Goals from Olivier Giroud and Marcos Alonso had Chelsea two up before an Antonio Rudiger own goal set up a nervous final few minutes.

Chelsea qualified for the round of 16 as runners-up in Group H, above Ajax and Lille. The Blues were tied on 11 points and +2 goal difference with group winners Valencia, but finished second due to the head-to-head tiebreak. After losing their opening match at home to Valencia, Chelsea went the remainder of the group unbeaten.

Bayern Munich are the only side with a perfect record in the competition, winning six out of six in Group B which contained Tottenham Hotspur, Olympiacos and Red Star Belgrade. They’re also comfortably the competition’s leading scorers with 24 goals.

Robert Lewandowski is the joint-leading scorer in the competition with 10 goals. Corentin Tolisso is the joint-second leading assist maker with 4 assists.

Bayern Munich maintained their one-point lead at the top of the Bundesliga with another win on Friday night, beating bottom side Paderborn 3-2 at the Allianz Arena. Serge Gnabry and Robert Lewandowski scored for Hans Dieter Flick’s side but there will be a concern that two goals were shipped at home. Bayern have conceded in four of their last five matches in all competitions.

The Blues have never been knocked out of a two-legged tie against German opposition. Most recently, they overcame Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League semi-finals last season.

Bayern have only won two of their last six matches in England. Both wins came in London: This season’s 7-2 win at Spurs and 2017’s 5-1 win at Arsenal.

These two sides have met four times previously in UEFA competition, with two wins apiece. Chelsea and Bayern famously met in the 2012 final of the Champions League. The match finished 1-1 after extra time before Chelsea won 4-3 in the proceeding penalty shootout.

It’ll be the first time the two sides have met at Stamford Bridge since 2005 quarter-finals of the 2004-05 Champions League. Chelsea won the match 4-2 and progressed to the semi-finals 6-5 on aggregate. Current manager Frank Lampard scored in both the home and away leg of the tie.

The second leg takes place at the Allianz Arena on March 18.
