Celtic vs Ferencvaros betting prediction: Celtic 3 – 1 Ferencvaros

Celtic welcomes Ferencvaros to Paradise on Wednesday for this UEFA Champions League Qualifiers match.

It will be the first meeting in history between the most successful clubs from Scotland and Hungary respectively.

This will be the seventh time Celtic have welcomed a Hungarian team to Celtic Park. Their impressive record to date is five wins and a draw. This suggests Ferencvaros will be up against it to get anything here.

Most of their matches against Hungarian opponents came in the 1960s, ‘70s and ‘80s. The exception is Celtic’s most recent match against MTK Budapest in 2003. The Bhoys won the UEFA Champions League Qualifier match 1-0 thanks to a goal by Chris Sutton. It gave them a 5-0 aggregate win over Ferencvaros’ inner-city rivals.

For Ferencvaros it represents only their third visit to Scotland for European competition. They lost 4-2 to Rangers in Glasgow back in 1960 in the Cup Winners’ Cup First Round 1st leg. A 2-1 victory in the return leg couldn’t prevent them exiting the competition on aggregate. More recently, they won 0-1 against Hearts in the UEFA Cup Group A back in 2004.

Celtic vs Ferencvaros: What are the betting odds?

Celtic come into this match on the back of two competitive victories. They demolished KR Reykjavík 6-0 in the first qualifying round last week. The Hoops followed this up with a 0-1 against Dundee United at the weekend. They are the huge favourites at 2/5 to win here.

Ferencvaros drew the big Budapest derby last week 1-1 against MTK in their opening fixture of the 2020/21 Nemzeti Bajnokság. The odds of this match also being deadlocked after 90 minutes are 7/2.

FTC defeated Djurgarden of Sweden in the first qualifying round last week. However, Ferencvaros are huge outsiders to go any further in the competition. Odds of 11/2 are available for them to defeat Celtic in 90 minutes.

Celtic vs Ferencvaros: Recommended bets

If you fancy the Hoops to hand out another 6-0 thrashing here, you can get great odds at 50/1.

Both teams have scored in all of their matches this season. You can bet on them both finding the net on Wednesday night at 10/11. Or against this happening at 4/5.

Alternatively, you can back Celtic to win the tie with Ferencvaros getting at least a consolation goal at 11/5.

Ferencvaros’ only two matches this season both finished with under 2.5 goals. Odds of 23/20 are available for another similarly low-scoring match here.

Celtic vs Ferencvaros: Match preview

Neil Lennon was experimenting with different systems towards the end of last season. After the 1-2 defeat against Rangers in the Premiership using the 4-2-3-1 system, he played a back three in all but one of their subsequent league games.

However, in Europe, he stuck with the 4-2-3-1 which ultimately saw them eliminated at the hands of FC Copenhagen.

This season, regardless of opponent or competition, Celtic have been consistent in playing 4-2-3-1 and will likely do so once more here.

In contrast, former Spurs player and now Ferencvaros manager, Sergey Rebrov, has been keeping the opposition guessing. In their last six competitive games, they have played a 4-2-3-1 twice, 4-3-3 twice and 3-4-2-1 also twice. Given the superiority of the Celtic squad, it seems likely they will want to thicken up the middle of the pitch. Therefore, a return to the 3-4-2-1 may be on the cards here.

They will no doubt look to emulate the tactics Rangers used against them before the lockdown. Stay very compact and narrow and force Celtic to try and use width to break them down. This will limit the spaces that Odsonne Edouard likes to operate in and force him to feed off of scraps.

To negate this, Mohamed Elyounoussi and James Forrest will likely be the key players for Celtic. They need to be committing players in wide areas to draw out central players to double up on them. This should create some spaces for Edouard and Olivier Ntcham to exploit in and around the central area and half-spaces where shots are created and scored.

Celtic team news vs Ferencvaros

Leigh Griffiths has been absent so far this campaign due to injury. He rolled his ankle in a pre-season friendly against Hibernian and has been working his way back to fitness since.

Mikey Johnston is the only other enforced absence for the Hoops, due to a knee problem.

Boli Bolingoli broke coronavirus quarantine rules resulting in recent matches against St Mirren and Aberdeen being postponed. He was subsequently dropped from the most recent squads to face KR Reykjavík and Dundee United. Given that he has now been removed from their Champions League squad, he may be looking for a new club before the transfer window closes.

James Forrest and Kristoffer Ajer are expected to return to the starting line-up having been rested against Dundee United at the weekend.

Albian Ajeti, who was recently signed from West Ham for £5m, will be hoping for a first start for the Bhoys here. He scored the only goal of the game against Dundee United at the weekend in his sixteen-minute cameo.

Ferencvaros team news vs Celtic

Ferencvaros are expected to use much the same side that eliminated Djurgarden in the previous round.

Should they opt to thicken up the defence, Lasha Dvali could come in as a third centre-back.

Aïssa Laïdouni is an option in midfield should they decide to add another defensive-midfielder to the mix to prevent Celtic playing through the middle of the pitch.
