Betting prediction: Bayern Munich 2-0 PSG

A rematch of the final from last season where Bayern Munich bested PSG 1-0 on the night, this quarterfinal clash has the intriguing storyline of the best centre-forward in the world being unable to feature. Without the services of Robert Lewandowski, most would probably panic, but Bayern has been a machine in recent seasons and even his absence may be no guarantee of slowing Hansi Flick’s men down as they continue to march in the Champions League.

Mauricio Pochettino has quite a few potential selection headaches to contend with, and though his key attacking players – sans Mauro Icardi – are guaranteed fit for duty, PSG will have to be immaculate if they hope to get the better of Bayern.

The Germans are slight favorites and they have a habit of turning on the afterburners against strong opponents.

To Win To Nil: Bayern Munich

Bayern at home is historically a tough nut to crack in the Champions League, and even without the services of Robert Lewandowski, remain incredibly capable in the final third but are also a slightly better-balanced side than PSG. Running out winners in a shut-out may not be all that surprising.

Winning Margin: Bayern Munich +2

Many expect to be a one-goal affair given the absence of Lewandowski and the attacking threats at Mauricio Pochettino’s disposal, but Bayern has a particular habit of being arguably the hardest side to beat in Europe when they come up against equal opposition in recent seasons. Even without Lewandowski, the cohesion under Flick could really toy with PSG in a way that could see them achieve a multi-goal cushion heading into the second leg.

Bayern Munich vs PSG: Match preview

The missing piece of the Bayern Munich puzzle in the shape of Robert Lewandowski is one that many will be disappointed to not see feature for the Bavarian giants when they take on PSG in a rematch of last year’s final.

And, compounding Bayern’s problems in attack, Lewandowski’s natural understudy, Serge Gnabry has also been ruled out of the match after he contracted Covid-19.

Those selection hurdles will leave Flick with two possible picks in his forward-line. The most likely scenario is that former Man City winger, Leroy Sane, will receive a rare start in Bayern’s attack against PSG.

Alternatively, Bayern could call upon him Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting to start this Champions League quarter-final.

Either way, with the likes of Kingsley Coman in support, the Bavarians will still be able to deploy a mobile and fluid front three all of who are capable of popping up anywhere across the forward line in a myriad of ways. All capable to rely on high levels of competence when on the ball, pace, and spatial awareness when looking for space to exploit, Thomas Müller deployed in the creative hole will have the joyous task of keeping all three supplied while remaining free-flowing.

Even without Lewandowski, Bayern’s forward line remains dangerous. Bayern are perhaps the only side in the world apart from Manchester City whose threat level does not diminish in the absence of their first-choice center forward.

PSG must take the match to Bayern Munich if they hope to advance

Getting the balance right on a tactical level is probably the hardest task in a knockout competition. Regardless of the talent any given manager is able to wield, if you get your deployment and tasking incorrect, more often than not you’re unable to recover if your opposition is good enough. Mauricio Pochettino has the tough task of trying to get it as close to perfect as possible when the Ligue 1 holders take on the Rekordmeister at the Allianz Arena.

Bolstered by not having to contend with the prospect of shackling Robert Lewandowski for 90-minutes, the former Argentine international must still rack his brain to find the balance necessary to throw a spanner in the works of the Bavarian giants. Bayern is so much more than Lewandowski, and the same can be said for their still incredibly dangerous forward line Hansi Flick is sure to try to unleash. The midfield duopoly of Leon Goretzka and Joshua Kimmich – arguably the best midfield pair in Europe – has been in otherworldly form this season, while the reanimation of Thomas Müller from goalscoring Raumdeuter to creative 10 and at the very heart of the Bayern attack presents a tactical conundrum that few opponents are able to solve.

But one thing remains utterly certain; if PSG comes into proceedings timid and let Bayern dominate the evening, they will effectively be knocked out of the competition before the second leg even takes place. To be irresponsible and brazen when in possession presents an equally poor choice of course, but the current French holders must also be unafraid to take the match to Bayern, especially given their own attacking prowess that is sure to be on display even without Mauro Icardi, who is likely unavailable on the night. Bayern is there to be gotten at if they are caught out while they push to take control of the tie, and the pace of Kylian Mbappe, Neymar, Moise Kean, and Angel Di Maria should offer a considerable threat that if brought to bear correctly, is more than capable of catching the Germans at the right moment. Putting their loss to Bayern in last years finals right would go a very long way in helping a PSG side that is desperate to cement their names as one of the truly elite clubs in Europe.

Bayern Munich team news vs PSG

Hansi Flick will have the unfortunate task of guiding Bayern Munich through the latter stages of the Champions League without Robert Lewandowski, who is set to miss four weeks through injury.

In another blow, Bayern Munich winger Serge Gnabry has tested positive for Covid-19.

Flick will also be without both Douglas Costa and Corentin Tolisso for the clash with PSG at the Allianz Arena, with Tanguy Nianzou a doubt as well.

PSG team news vs Bayern Munich

Mauricio Pochettino will have major selection concerns when PSG faces the arduous task of facing Bayern away from the French capital.

Midfield duo Marco Veratti and Alessandro Florenzi both miss the trip to Bavaria after contracting Covid-19, while Juan Bernat also misses the trip through injury.

Leandro Paredes will also miss the first leg, having to serve his one-match suspension. Additionally, Mauro Icardi, Danilo Pereira, and Layvin Kurzawa are all doubts and face late assessments, though Kurzawa perhaps has the best chance of featuring.
