‘The Goddess’ welcome Liverpool to the Stadio Atleti Azzurri d’Italia in Bergamo on Tuesday for this UEFA Champions League match.

This is Liverpool’s first-ever visit to the Stadio Atleti Azzurri d’Italia, which is also known as Stadio di Bergamo, or Gewiss Stadium for sponsorship reasons. It is a shame they won’t get to enjoy the full experience of the Bergamo crowd due to COVID-19.

However, it is far from their first visit to Italy for competitive European fixtures. Almost all of Liverpool’s success stories seem to include a trip to Italy along the way. This includes when they recently lifted the Champions League trophy for the 6th time, with a trip to Naples which they lost 1-0.

They returned last season to Naples and, despite a better performance, lost by a bigger margin of 2-0 due to two late goals.

In fact, their overall record on Italian soil isn’t great, with just 3 wins and 2 draws from 15 visits here.

It also isn’t Atalanta’s first time rolling out the welcome mat for English opponents. In the last few seasons, they have welcomed both Everton and Manchester City, and remain undefeated against English opponents in their home stadium.

Atalanta vs Liverpool: What are the betting odds?

I Nerazzurri won the last time they welcomed a side from Liverpool here. It wasn’t the Reds, but their Merseyside neighbours Everton, who lost here back in 2017. Atalanta are 21/10 to put the red-half of Liverpool to the sword also with a win here.

Atalanta drew with Ajax here in their previous Champions League match. Odds of 3/1 are available if you see Atalanta and Liverpool cancelling each other out on Tuesday also.

Liverpool kicked off their 2020/21 Champions League campaign with a win in Amsterdam against Ajax. They are the 21/20 favourites to become the first English side to win in Bergamo to maintain their perfect start to their Champions League campaign.

Atalanta vs Liverpool: Recommended bets

Atalanta’s last home victory over English opposition came back in 2017 by a scoreline of 3-0 against Liverpool’s city rivals, Everton. A repeat of this score on Tuesday is available at odds of 33/1.

Liverpool’s only Champions League away-day this season ended in a 0-1 win in Amsterdam. You can back them at 14/1 for the same scoreline here on Tuesday.

Atalanta games in Serie A this season average more goals than any other side, with an average of 5 goals per game. Likewise, Liverpool games have been the most entertaining to watch in the Premier League this season, with an average of 4.6 goals per game. So, the omens are good for a high-scoring thriller here and you can back a high scoring game here on Tuesday with odds of 4/11 on for over 2.5 goals.

Atalanta vs Liverpool: Match preview

From the moment the draw was made for the group stages of the Champions League, fans of Atalanta, Liverpool and even many neutrals will have had this match circled on the calendar.

The two teams that so often promise exciting games. An Atalanta that never defends a lead and just seems to want to outscore every opponent vs a Liverpool side that never knows when they are beaten. The two teams who average the highest number of goals in their games for their respective leagues, with only Bayern Munich outdoing them across Europe’s top 5 leagues.

Atalanta are an extremely difficult opponent to play against. They are one of the few sides that has more – much more – positional rotation and interchange than Liverpool. However, the thing that makes them unique is how they use the centre of the pitch – or not, as the case may be.

Pass and heat maps for their performances show a team that almost splits the team into two halves – with central players acting as links between the two. They aim for wide overloads and quick switches from one flank to another to open up spaces to exploit.

If this all sounds familiar as a Liverpool fan, it is because these are all facets of Klopp’s Liverpool. However, Gian Piero Gasperini’s side is like the extreme version of Klopp’s Liverpool.

Why we think Liverpool  will beat Atalanta

So why do 101 Great Goals believe it is advantage Liverpool on Tuesday? Fresh legs!

We are seeing all across Europe an uptick in joint and muscular injuries from players as the demands of the players post-lockdown take their toll. Almost no break between seasons, no proper pre-season and a hectic schedule since the first ball was kicked of 2020/21 has made for an interesting and bizarre start to the season.

The ‘big’ sides domestically are suffering humiliating defeats, such as Bayern’s 4-1 loss at Hoffenheim, PSG’s two defeats to start to the Ligue 1 campaign, Man City’s 2nd half collapse against Leicester, United losing 1-6 at home to Spurs and of course, Liverpool being thrashed 7-2 by Villa.

While Atalanta almost certainly have the players and tactics to defeat Liverpool on Tuesday night, Liverpool have the deeper squad. They have been able to rotate out while winning the front three of Mané, Firmino and Salah – something that was a problem in recent years. And in Diogo Jota, it looks like they finally have someone who can rotate in for Salah or Mané without drop-off in quality or huge change stylistically to accommodate them.

On top of this Xherdan Shaqiri is finally back and playing and showing the quality which saw Klopp sign him in the first place. A proper match-winner from the bench if needed – as it was on Saturday when he duly obliged.

They also have Naby Keita and Thiago nearing a return to give them new depth and ideas in the middle of the park.

Atalanta’s tactics seem them put in a lot of miles on players with aging legs, without the quality on the bench to properly replace them. If Liverpool are still in the game late on, they have the players to pick off a tiring Atalanta just as PSG did in this competition a few months ago.

Atalanta team news vs Liverpool

Marco Tumminello and Cristiano Piccini haven’t featured for Atalanta so far this season and remain ruled out for the visit of Liverpool with knee injuries.

Marco Carnesecchi has been missing from the last few matchday squads for Atalanta due to Coronavirus. However, with Pierluigi Gollini making a return from an ACL injury last weekend, it is unlikely Atalanta’s 3rd choice keeper would have been named in the squad on Tuesday.

Mattia Caldara only managed 45 minutes of Atalanta’s opening day win against Torino. He’s been out ever since with a patella problem and likely won’t be seen on the pitches again until 2021.

Marten de Roon, Robin Gosens and Sam Lammers are all regulars in the squad for Atalanta yet weren’t involved in their 1-2 win at Crotone at the weekend. De Roon is believed to be carrying an injury, but the others are expected to return to the squad here.

Liverpool team news vs Atalanta

Virgil van Dijk and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain remain on the long-term injury list for Liverpool due to knee injuries.

Nat Phillips, who put in a man of the match performance at the weekend standing in for van Dijk, isn’t available in the Champions League for Liverpool due to not being registered for their squad.

Fabinho (pictured above) is also ruled out due to a hamstring injury that forced him off in Liverpool’s previous Champions League match against FC Midtjylland.

Joel Matip started the Merseyside Derby for Liverpool. However, bar a 1-minute cameo on opening day against Leeds, this remains his only action for the Reds so far this campaign. He has been out since the derby due to a muscular injury. If he is still unavailable on Tuesday, Rhys Williams looks set to step into defence once again.

Konstantinos Tsimikas has missed the last 8 matches for the Reds due to a thigh injury. While he is nearing a return to action, it is unlikely he is thrown in against such difficult opponents as Atalanta. Tsimikas could be on the bench though here.

Thiago Alcantara and Naby Keita have both been missing for the last few matches for the Reds. They were expected to be included in the squad at the weekend to face West Ham. Their ongoing absence raises the question whether they are as near a return as Klopp suggested.
