Ajax vs Liverpool: Special betting offer
Betting prediction: Ajax 1 – 2 Liverpool
Ajax welcomes Liverpool to the Johan Cruyff Arena in Amsterdam on Wednesday for this UEFA Champions League match.
Despite the long and successful history of both clubs in European competitions, this is only the second time they have been drawn against each other in a competitive European fixture.
The only previous occasion was way back in the 1960s when the pair faced each other in the previous format of this competition – the European Cup. Ajax hammered Liverpool 7-3 in the Last 16, before being eliminated themselves in the Quarterfinal stage by Dukla Prague.
Therefore, this will be Liverpool’s first competitive fixture at the Johan Cruyff Arena in Amsterdam, which opened in 1996. They will hope to fare better here than they did in Ajax’s previous home – Olympisch Stadion Amsterdam.
Ajax vs Liverpool: What are the betting odds?
The Lancers routed Liverpool on the only previous occasion the two clubs met on Dutch soil over 50 years ago. Ajax have won 3 out of 3 home matches in the Eredivisie so far this season but have lost both of their previous two Champions League matches here 0-1. This sees them start the match as 15/4 underdogs, despite playing at home.
The last match between these two teams ended in a 2-2 draw at Anfield. Odds of 16/5 are available if you see Ajax and Liverpool cancelling each other out on Wednesday once again.
Liverpool have failed to win either of their previous two away matches in the Premier League. They also lost 1-0 in Madrid to Atletico in their last Champions League away-day. Despite this, they start the match as favourites at 7/10 on.

Ajax vs Liverpool: Recommended bets
101 Great Goals’ prediction of Ajax 1 – 2 Liverpool is available at odds of 8/1.
Ajax’s only previous home match against Liverpool ended in a 5-1 victory back in December 1966. A repeat of this score on Wednesday is available at odds of 150/1.
Liverpool’s last away win in the Champions League was a 0-2 victory in Salzburg back in December 2019. Their last Premier League away victory was by the same scoreline at Chelsea on matchday 2. You can back them at 11/1 for the same 0-2 scoreline here on Wednesday.
Ajax vs Liverpool has historically been a high scoring game with the two previous matches both seeing over 2.5 goals, averaging 5 goals per game. You can back another high scoring game here on Wednesday with odds of 4/11 for over 2.5 goals.
Mohamed Salah scored a stunning first-time strike at the weekend in the Merseyside derby. The Egyptian international has looked back to his best for Liverpool so far this season. Salah is the 13/5 favourite to score the game’s opener on Wednesday. Or 1/2 on to bag a goal at any time during the game against Ajax.
Klass-Jan Huntelaar hasn’t featured much for Ajax so far this season. He has been consigned to just three cameo appearances in the Eredivisie and has so far failed to find the net. Despite this, the 37-year-old is the favourite of those playing for the home side to get on the scoresheet at 7/5. You can back Huntelaar at 6/1 to grab the game’s opening goal.
Ajax vs Liverpool: Match preview
It comes as a surprise that these two members of European football royalty haven’t faced each other since the 1960s.
The 2019 Champions League final in Madrid was expected to be Liverpool vs Ajax, until Lucas Moura’s dramatic last-gasp 95th-minute winner gave us an all-English final instead.
Much was said after Liverpool claimed their 6th Champions League trophy. Dušan Tadić, who is the current Ajax captain, faced backlash on social media for his words on the final.
“If Ajax had taken what belonged to us in a Tottenham match, we would have defeated Liverpool in the May final at Madrid’s Wanda. It was, without any dilemma, one of the worst finals in history. Ajax would certainly not play as poorly as Tottenham and would be much more inspired than Liverpool. The confidence of the Ajax players represented such a force that Liverpool would not have adequate defense.”
– Dušan Tadić, Ajax Captain
This perceived lack of respect for Liverpool and their achievement could act as the Reds’ team talk on Wednesday. Klopp merely needs to pin this up on the wall of the dressing room and send the players out with a desire to make Tadic eat his words.
Of course, the spine of that Ajax team is no longer at the club. A recurring theme in history is Ajax seeing their team gutted when they build a team that beats those from the ‘big 5’ European Leagues.
In this instance, they lost captain Matthijs de Ligt to Juventus for €75m. Frenkie de Jong to Barcelona for a similar amount. Hakim Ziyech to Chelsea and Donny van de Beek to Manchester United both for around €40m and Kasper Dolberg to Nice for €20.5m.
Thus, European success has become a double-edged sword for the Eredivisie’s most successful club. They would love to smash Liverpool in Amsterdam once again though, even if it causes the vultures to start circling once more.
Ajax team news vs Liverpool
Erik ten Hag can report a clean bill of health coming into Wednesday’s game.
Mohammed Kudus made his return from injury at the weekend in Ajax’s 5-1 win over Heerenveen. He had an outstanding game, creating 2 including the opening goal and also getting on the scoresheet himself. He will be hoping it was enough to earn a start against the Premier League Champions.
Zakaria Labyad, Antony, Quincy Promes (above), and Edson Álvarez have all been ever-presents in the starting XI for Ajax prior to the previous weekend. Erik ten Hag is expected to reinstate them to the starting XI to face Liverpool.
Davy Klaassen made his first appearance for Ajax at the weekend since returning to his boyhood club in a £10m deal earlier this month. He is expected to keep his place against Liverpool.
Liverpool team news vs Ajax
Jürgen Klopp will be wishing he could also report a clean bill of health for this match. Unfortunately, he has numerous injury worries, particularly at the back.
Liverpool’s manager and fans alike were both furious with the Jordan Pickford tackle that saw Virgil van Dijk (above) hobble out of the game. Klopp confirmed the player suffered a ruptured ACL which means we likely won’t see the Dutch international back on the pitch for almost a year.
Joel Matip, who was subbed in for van Dijk at the weekend, is also struggling with a muscular injury. Therefore, we are likely to see Fabinho start in defence with Wijnaldum coming into midfield for Liverpool.
Alisson Becker has missed Liverpool’s last 2 league matches with a shoulder injury picked up in a training collision. He isn’t expected back between the sticks until November at the earliest. Adrian will continue to deputise in goal for Brazil’s #1.
Thiago Alcantara is another Liverpool player who suffered a horror tackle in the Merseyside derby. Unlike van Dijk, he was able to complete the match. However, he confirmed to his manager after the game that he thinks he damaged his knee in the tackle. Liverpool are unlikely to risk the Spanish international unnecessarily here.
Another midfielder ruled out is Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. He suffered a knee injury in pre-season and is currently in long-term rehab.
One positive piece of news though for Klopp is the availability of Naby Keita. He tested positive for COVID-19 while on international duty with Guinea causing him to miss the derby, but he could be involved in midweek for the Reds.
“He looked very good yesterday in training, to be honest. In the moment, I would probably rather expect him to be involved but I don’t know it.”
