“Liverpool Football Club have reached an agreement with SC Heerenveen for the transfer of winger Oussama Assaidi, subject to the player passing a medical. The 24-year-old, who has scored 20 goals in 68 appearances for Heerenveen in the Dutch Eredivisie, will now undergo a medical at Melwood.” – Statement on the official Liverpool website.
Having been linked with Barcelona’s Cristian Tello for much of this week, Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers added more width to his squad with the signing of Oussama Assaidi on Thursday evening.
A Moroccan international, Assaidi has grown up in the Dutch Eredivisie and is an intriguing signing by Liverpool. The last few seasons have seen the attacker impress for Heerenveen, scoring 9 goals in 2010/2011 and then 10 during the last campaign.
Much like Liverpool starlet Raheem Sterling, but with plenty more experience, Assaidi is fast, zippy and can play left or right as well as up front.
Crucially, as his stats suggest Assaidi has an eye for goal and most Dutch experts seem enthused that he will progress at Anfield under Brendan Rodgers.
If there are any criticisms it is that Assaidi is fairly slender and has the tendency to play with his head down but comparisons with Scott Sinclair at Swansea will be popular with Liverpool fans after what Rodgers did with the former Chelsea youngster.
There have also been question marks over whether Assaidi wanted to leave Holland with a move to Ajax only recently breaking down. His agent is Mino Raiola (famously represents Zlatan Ibrahimovic) which suggests he might see Liverpool as a stepping stone to bigger things.
The video evidence below should enthuse Liverpool fans – as will this Golazo from last May v FC Twente.
