Although not quite in the same league as the Cesc Fabregas, Luka Modric or Carlos Tevez transfer sagas this summer, there has been much speculation over highly-rated young Costa Rica striker Joel Campbell heading to Arsenal.
The Deportivo Saprissa striker was supposedly signing for Arsenal last month only for a late bid from Manchester United to stall the deal, according to reports Real Madrid are also interested.
101 Great Goals was one of the first websites to report on Campbell being on Arsenal’s radar – video evidence here.
Just two days ago, Campbell was quoted as saying: “We are talking to Arsenal again, I have not signed yet, but I’m waiting to hear from my agents.”
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger will be wary through, after having impressed at both the Copa America this summer and now the Under-20 World Cup, Joel Campbell could well cost a lot more than the one million pound fee that has been mooted.
Campbell scored the opener on 22 against Australia on Wednesday evening, beating his man and showing good balance and firing home.
The second goal from the Arsenal target was a fine finish, it came five minutes later and was a pinpoint volleyed finish into the corner to make it 2-1. Costa Rica went on to win the encounter 3-2.
