Transfers rumours linking Tottenham to Portuguese-based based have been a dime a dozen since Andre Villas-Boas has taken the hot-seat at White Hart Lane.
A quick flick through the gossip columns reveals Spurs links to Hulk, Joao Moutinho and Alvaro Pereira, and on Thursday a new player has been thrown into mix: 20-year-old Ghanian winger Christian Atsu.
Atsu is a player few will have heard of.
Snapped up by Porto when he was just 17, Andre Villas-Boas was at the helm of the Dragons when Atsu began life in the Liga Sagres. Raw and unpolished, the teenager never made a league appearance during AVB’s reign, however he’s since collected league experience after being farmed out to Rio Ave.
During 2011-12 Atsu featured 27 times for Rio Ave scoring six goals, whilst he’s also opened his international goalscoring account with one goal in two games for the Black Stars.
Fast, creative and always looking to take on his marker, Atsu is a midfield live-wire who spends most of his time in the final third of the pitch. Put another way, tracking back does not seem one of his specialities.
So are Spurs really interested in signing Christian Atsu?
With Gareth Bale having locked down the left-hand side of the Spurs team for as long as he can play, and with Jake Livermore, Aaron Lennon, Danny Rose, and Andros Townsend all on Spurs’ books too, it appears that Tottenham have plenty of midfield options already.
Christian Atsu could join those already swelled ranks, however he’d likely have to go out on loan immediately if he wanted to get game-time in the forthcoming season. That puts a big doubt on the likelihood of this deal materialising.
