USA win gold in women’s football; Juventus win the Trofeo Birra Moretti (by winning two penalty shoot-outs)

Brazil 0 – USA 1 (Women’s Olympics, August 21, 2008) Carli Loyd grabbed the winning goal six minutes into extra time to give USA the Olympic gold in women’s football after they had nulified the threat of the Brazilians for much of the game.


Napoli 0 – Juventus 0* (Pens. 4-5) (Trofeo Birra Moretti, August 21, 2008) The opening 45-minute game of the tournament failed to produce any goals and Claudio Ranieri’s side won on penalties, De Zerbi saw his penalty saved by Juve keeper Antonio Chimenti.

Napoli 0 – AC Milan 1 (Trofeo Birra Moretti, August 21, 2008) Alberto Paloschi headed home the winner in the final minute of the 45-minute match at the end of a half that saw both teams threaten.

Juventus 0* – AC Milan 0 (Trofeo Birra Moretti, August 21, 2008) (Pens. 5-4) Following a goalless draw whoever won this shootout would win the tournament. At 4-4 on pens, Ambrosini missed for the Rossoneri giving Amauri the chance to win it, but he saw his effort saved by Kalac. Chimenti then saved from Favalli and Molinaro converted to give Juve the win. The trophy ceremony at the end of the tournament can be seen here.

Colombia 0 – Ecuador 1 (International Friendly, August 20, 2008) Christian Benitez scored the winner in the 40th minute, finishing after his penalty had been saved by Agustin Julio.
