Liverpool as a city and club has been rejoicing today at the news that was too long in coming.
Following the inquest verdict yesterday that Hillsborough disaster amounted to the ‘unlawful killing’ of 96 people, the people of Liverpool, and most importantly the families of the victims, have been given the symbolic recognition for which they have campaigned for the past two decades.
Liverpool players past and present have been reacting to the news on social media, and these two tweets in particular will have been especially welcomed by Liverpool fans.
Luis Suarez and Pepe Reina, both of whom were Kop favourites during their time at Anfield, tweeted their relief at the news (Reina’s was a retweet), with Suarez writing a particularly heartfelt tribute.
Both players built up a real connection with the city and the people during their time on Merseyside, which has not been erased despite their departures from the club.
Justice at last for the 96!! You'll never walk alone!! pic.twitter.com/FCOWDJDkCH
