Tottenham issue a club statement saying “we have NOT contacted any club regarding coaching appointments”

Tottenham have hit back at reports that the club made an approach for Ajax manager Frank De Boer.

After several days in which media companies both in England and in Holland have been releasing unequivocal reports saying that Spurs have reached out to Ajax boss De Boer to see if he would be interested in moving to White Hart Lane, the Lillywhites have now tried to claim all those articles are tosh.

In a strangely strong press release, Tottenham posted the following on their website on Wednesday:

Reports that we have made approaches to other clubs regarding coaching staff are wholly inaccurate. We have NOT contacted any club regarding coaching appointments.

We regret that a statement such as this is necessary, however we feel it is important to clarify matters.

Really? That seems unlikely, as Tottenham’s statement runs contrary to widespread reports that Spurs approached Ajax’s director of football Marc Overmars by telephone within the past month to inquire about De Boer’s availability.

Moreover, in an interview with national broadcaster NOS on Tuesday, De Boer confirmed the approach, adding: “I’m going to listen and talk. Then I’ll make my feelings known.”
