Thiago Alcantara left Barcelona for Bayern Munich last summer in order to ensure first team football under Pep Guardiola to secure a place in the Spain World Cup squad.
Tonight, Marca have confirmed that Alcantara will miss the World Cup due to a knee injury picked up in April.
Mazinho’s son was always touch and go to make the World Cup despite being named in Vicente Del Bosque’s original 30-man provisional World Cup squad yesterday.
In April, Thiago ruptured a medial ligament in his right knee, leaving him unlikely to make the World Cup.
It has been confirmed this evening that a reoccurrence of the injury means Thiago is ruled out of Saturday’s DFB Pokal final between Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund and will also pull out of the Spain World Cup squad.
Marca suggest that Thiago Alcantara would likely have gone to Brazil as direct back-up to Barcelona midfielder Xavi in the middle of the park.
Two potential replacements into the 30-man squad for Del Bosque are Real Madrid’s Isco or Athletic Bilbao’s Ander Herrera.
