Once again, The Sun has outdone itself with some shoddy journalism of the highest order this morning, placing incorrect pictures on their “world exclusive” and main football story of the day.
Antony Kastrinakis claims that “Arsenal and Barcelona are locked in a bitter bust-up that is souring relations between the Champions League rivals. The Spaniards are furious with Arsenal for trying to snatch 16-year-old wonderkid Jon Miquel Toral Harper from their academy — just like they did with Cesc Fabregas.”
Undoubtedly a very interesting story, thanks to a whole host of angles, including Cesc Fabregas, the Champions League last 16 tie and Barcelona’s famed youth system. Except, it isn’t a “world exclusive,” Gooner Talk reported it as did the excellent Young Guns blog yesterday from Catalan radio station Rac1.
To add to their lies of a “world exclusive,” The Sun have also plastered this article with three pictures all showing a youngster in a Barcelona shirt. Except, it isn’t Jon Toral but in fact Sergi Samper, another talented youngster on the production line at La Masia.
Toral (pictured on the right), who has an English mother, is a left winger who can also play on the right. He recently scored a hat-trick versus Cornell and is known as hard working and the most mature player of his age group at Barcelona.
Reports in Spain say Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool were also after Toral who is expected to make his Arsenal debut within two years. To add insult to injury for Barcelona, the youngsters agent is Pep Guardiola’s brother. The Catalan giants are expected to receive 300,000 euros in compensation.
As for Sergi Samper, Arsenal did want to sign him as well according to El Mundo Deportivo but he is regarded as one of the best youngsters in the world and Barcelona will not let him go.
UPDATE: It is a very sad day for football journalism in England as the Daily Mirror have simply copied and pasted The Sun article and also used the wrong picture. Article here.
