A bizarre incident played out at the end of Sporting Lisbon’s Taca de Liga match with Moreirense on Thursday night.
Moreirense, second in the Portuguese second division, were tied 1-1 at powerhouse Sporting before the hosts won a penalty in the 93rd minute.
The spot-kick seemed to provide a vital reprieve for Domingos Paciencia’s men as they sought to claim their first win in five outings since the turn of the year. Only it wasn’t.
In a farcical turn of events, Sporting striker Valeri Bojinov physically pushed teammate (a designated penalty taker) Matias Fernandez away from the penalty spot as he demanded to take the spot-kick himself. The push, however, instantly blew up in the Bulgarian’s face as seconds later he watched his effort turned aside by the Moreirense keeper as the minnows claimed a draw.
Bojinov’s miss drew a furious reaction from the Lisbon crowd who are now demanding that the striker be shipped out the club asap.
