This is one of those amazingly crazy stories from the lower levels of world football.
On Wednesday night in Brazil’s Sao Paulo third division, Juventus, who needed a win to keep hopes of promotion alive, played host to Palmeiras B, who also needed victory to secure promotion with one
round to go.
In the opening 45 Juventus took a stranglehold on proceedings by taking a 2-nil lead into the interval. But after halftime break Palmeiras B hit back with a brace from their striker Diogo to set up a frantic finish to the contest.
Then came the controversy as injury time ticked over.
In the 93rd minute Juventus won a corner, and, with so much at stake, furious jostling in the box turned into more violent altercations in which the Palmeiras B’s keeper eventually received his marching order after exchanging punches with the opposition. Having used all three of their substitutes, double-scoring striker Diogo was forced to put on the gloves, and then the incredible happened.
Eventually Juventus got the opportunity to take their late late corner, only for Diogo to claim the ball after a weak header on target. Then, with Juve having thrown all their players up-field for their final chance to win the game, Diogo quickly reacted by thumping a ball upfield. Superbly the ball bounced all the way towards the empty Juventus net, and “keeper” Diogo managed to score one of the most bizarre hat-tricks goals ever.
