Some more clips for you from Saturday’s Soccer Saturday show on Sky Sports.
Host Jeff Stelling made it his business to pull up two footballers for their awful diving antics on the show, flagging up Javier Mascherano’s terrible dive for Liverpool when playing Hull just over a week ago before showing a collection of tumbles and rolls from Barca’s Dani Alves during the Champions League match with Chelsea last Tuesday.
Starting with Mascherano, Jeff picked on Phil Thompson to defend the Argentine for going to ground all too easily at the KC Stadium in the build-up to Xabi Alonso’s opener.
The incident came about after Mascherano found himself under the watchful eye of George Boateng, with the Liverpool midfielder opting to con the ref into blowing his whistle when under pressure. With Thommo refusing to label Mascherano a cheat, it was left to Charlie George to shout “he’s going down already” at the start of the clip, while Matt Le Tissier later piped up with “that’s a disgrace” as the clip was replayed for the panel.

But diving is hardly a disease confined to the Premier League, and Jeff made sure to wield his criticism evenly by flagging up a series of blatant dives from Brazilian full-back Dani Alves during Barca’s goalless draw with Chelsea in the Nou Camp.
Calling Alves “an absolute disgrace,” the panel chuckled as Jeff provided the video evidence showing all of Alves’ dives during the contest, with Thommo jokingly interjecting by disassociating Mascherano from such behaviour.
