Tahiti’s captain didn’t play in the beach soccer World Cup final because he’s Mormon, doesn’t play on Sundays

Portugal won the beach soccer World Cup on Sunday, when they defeated Tahiti 5-3 in the final.

One of the biggest talking points surrounding the final was the absence of Tahiti’s captain Naea Bennett from the match.

38-year-old Naea Bennett has been on the beach soccer scene for many years now, and over the years the player’s religion has affected his participation in some matches.

Naea Bennett is a Mormon, and according to his beliefs he refuses to ‘work’ on Sundays.

Accordingly, Naea Bennett missed out on the World Cup final against Portugal, and his absence likely contributed to his country’s result.

The competition was still a massive success for Tahiti, however, as the small Pacific nation reached their first beach soccer final in just their third appearance at the tournament.
