Stoke frustrate Liverpool; Arsenal win at the Reebok; Chopra wins the derby for Sunderland; West Ham win Zola’s first game

Bolton 1 – Arsenal 3 (Premier League, September 20, 2008) (MOTD highlights here.) Kevin Davies headed in from a corner in the 15th minute to put Bolton in front against Arsenal. After some sustained pressure from the Gunners, Emmanuel Eboue equalised after Bendtner played him in and seconds later Arsenal took the lead when Nicklas Bendtner finished off a brilliant Arsenal move. Injury-time of the first-half saw Kevin Davies foul Gael Clichy with a shocking tackle, the French full-back went to hospital, the Bolton striker received a yellow card. At the start of the second-half, Jaaskelainen saved well from a Song shot. Bolton also threatened early in the second period. Denilson secured the win after good work by Adebayor and Walcott.

Liverpool 0 – Stoke City 0 (Premier League, September 20, 2008) (Longer highlights here, MOTD highlights here.) Liverpool and Steven Gerrard thought they’d scored in the second minute at home to Stoke, but the goal was ruled out for offside. Despite Liverpool having a number of chances in the first-half, it was 0-0 at the break. (First-half highlights here.) The home side continued to push for the opener after the break, both Keane and Torres went close with a header before El Nino then blazed over when he probably should have scored. Dirk Kuyt was the next Liverpool forward to go close.

West Ham 3 – Newcastle 1 (Premier League, September 20, 2008) (Longer highlights here.) David di Michele got the Gianfranco Zola era off to a great start at Upton Park, his shot taking a deflection off Taylor and sailing over the head of Shay Given. David di Michele got his second before the break, chipping around taylor and striking the ball into the Newcastle net. Matthew Etherington scored the third early in the second-half before Michael Owen pulled one back for the Toon.

Sunderland 2 – Middlesbrough 0 (Premier League, September 20, 2008) Michael Chopra was the hero for Sunderland as he came off the bench to secure the win. Sunderland’s first came when Chopra finished well after a through-ball from Richardson and on his first appearance of the season Chopra completed the win in injury-time after a square-ball from Malbranque. Minutes before Chopra’s first, Stewart Downing blasted a penalty over the bar.

Blackburn Rovers 1 – Fulham 0 (Premier League, September 20, 2008) Both teams had good chances but it was Matt Derbyshire who got the only goal seven minutes from the end after a fine knock-down from Santa Cruz.
