Sometimes footballers have a bad day, and Friday night proved one of those nightmare occasions for 34-year-old goalie Stephen Postma.
Aston Villa and Wolves fans should need little reminding of who Postma is. From 2002 until 2006 to Dutch custodian rattled around on the benches of both Midlands clubs, recording a less than impressive 42 appearances in England over a four year period.
Postma has since continued his journeyman exploits in the Dutch league, where he is currently posted as second tier AGOVV Apeldorn. But in the Jupiler League match with Telstar, a contest which the visitors won 3-2, Postma must have wished he’d be given another night off.
Telstar took a 1-nil lead into the break, and five minutes into the second half Postma’s horror show began to unfold. From a simple long throw-in Telstar winger Wouter de Vogel broke down the left hand side, and the fluffy-haired number 14 whizzed down the channel before getting to the byline. Once there Vogel tried to slid a cross into the mixer, only for the ball the deflect off Postma’s inner thigh and divert over the line.
AGOVV then performed a dramatic u-turn to rally from 2-down to level at  2-2, but it was all in vain courtesy of a shocking blooper from Postma in the final minute of the match.
From a loose corner the ball fell to Telstar’s Milan Hoek 30-yards out from goal. Under no pressure the teenager thumped a shot goalwards, but no danger seemed imminent as the ball travelled straight at keeper Postma.
All he had was catch the ball. Instead the keeper pushed it in his own net.
