Schumacher/Battiston revisited: Joachim Mununga wrongly sent off for being attacked by keeper

The infamous clash in the 1982 World Cup between Harald Schumacher and Patrick Battiston was revisited yesterday in the Belgium Pro League.

Whilst neither Mechelen striker Joachim Mununga or Kortijk keeper Glenn Verbauwhede were injured as badly as Battiston all those years ago, a similar sense of injustice surrounded the clash last night.

With Mechelen 1-up and just reduced to ten men, Joachim Mununga (pictured) chased a long ball forward and seemingly got clattered in the stomach by Verbauwhede.

The referee thought otherwise and sent off the midfielder despite the goalkeeper clearly making contact with the onrushing attacker.

Kortijk levelled the game at 1-1 with a late goal from Laurent Cimon but one would imagine that Mununga is still fuming over his straight red.

One of the craziest incidents of the weekend can be seen here.
