“It was just a gesture because the Irish people are very close and they stick with each other through good times and bad times. He [James Nolan] was a big, big soccer fan and it was a shame, so it was just a show of respect really.” – Robbie Keane.
Robbie Keane, Ireland’s captain, returned to Major League Soccer on Saturday during the LA Galaxy’s 3-nil whooping of the Vancouver Whitecaps.
Despite not hitting the target in Poland/Ukraine, Keane hit the ground running on his US return scoring his side’s second goal with a fine goal that saw him evade three challenges before slipping the ball into the net.
Immediately after scoring, Robbie Keane marked the occasion with a tribute to James Nolan; the 21-year-old Irishman who died in Poland after accidentally drowning. Keane produced a Galaxy jersey with “RIP James Nolan” printed on the back, and the Eire talisman also revealed “I called his father today to send my condolences and to say that my thoughts were with him and the family.”
Keane also confirmed he’ll send the jersey to Nolan’s family in Ireland.
